Role overview
The purpose of this role is to create and run an effective stores function that keeps inventory accurate, supports timely kitting for production, and ensures materials move smoothly through the operation. Success in this position depends on having experience building a stores process from the ground up, strong ERP/MRP knowledge, advanced Excel capability, and an understanding of Kanban methods used in lean manufacturing.
Stores setup and operations
- Plan and put in place an organised stores layout, including bin positions, labelling, and day-to-day workflow.
- Develop and work to standard procedures for receiving goods, storing items, and preparing kits.
- Set up Kanban-based replenishment and visual control practices to improve material flow.
Inventory management
- Keep stock information accurate in Excel and in ERP or MRP systems.
- Carry out cycle counts and complete stocktakes, then resolve any differences found.
- Track inventory levels, reorder points, and supplier lead times to avoid shortages or excess stock.
Goods receiving
- Accept incoming deliveries, check quantities and paperwork, and record items into the inventory system.
- Ensure items are stored promptly in the correct bin locations.
- Manage non-conforming materials and work with purchasing to close them out.
Kitting and production support
- Assemble kits for orders accurately and within required timeframes.
- Work with planning, engineering, and production teams to handle shortages and changing priorities.
- Assist with Kanban-led supply of materials to production lines.
Reporting and analysis
- Use advanced Excel tools such as pivot tables, VLOOKUP, formulas, and conditional formatting to maintain inventory trackers and performance dashboards.
- Create reports covering stock accuracy, item ageing, and consumption trends.
- Support continuous improvement work through data analysis.
Purchasing and logistics support
- Provide extra support to the procurement team during peak workloads.
- Pick up urgent orders directly from suppliers when needed.
Requirements
- Background in setting up and organising stores operations.
- Solid experience with ERP/MRP platforms such as SAP, Sage, or Dynamics.
- Strong Excel skills for analysis and reporting.
- Working knowledge of Kanban and lean manufacturing practices.
- High attention to detail with strong problem-solving ability.
- Comfortable working across purchasing, planning, and production functions.
- Experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment is preferred.
- Understanding of ISO 9001 traceability processes is an advantage.
- Forklift licence, or a willingness to complete training, is desirable.
