Overview
This role involves systematically reading and recording electric and water meter data for Owensboro Municipal Utilities customers. Employees work under the Billing Supervisor's guidance, using established procedures to ensure accurate meter readings and proper equipment handling.
Key Responsibilities
- Precisely record electric and water meter readings into a handheld device.
- Travel assigned routes, ensuring actual meter readings are obtained to avoid estimates and noting any inconsistencies.
- Collect meter reading tools daily from the office and utilize them safely and effectively.
- Verify meter functionality and promptly report any defects to the supervisor.
- Operate OMU vehicles safely and access meters on customer premises, evaluating potential hazards such as animals or obstacles.
- Report cases of meter tampering, theft, or infrastructure issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Maintain courteous interaction with customers while safeguarding their confidential information.
- Plan work effectively to meet deadlines despite weather challenges or other impediments.
- Perform any other assigned related duties.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education equivalent to high school diploma or GED, preferably with office or shop skills emphasis.
- Approximately 7 to 11 months of relevant experience or equivalent education-experience combination.
- Capacity to understand written materials such as policy manuals and safety instructions and to prepare routine reports.
- Basic arithmetic skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and ability to interpret percentages and graphs.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and solve routine problems with limited variables.
- Valid driver’s license mandatory.
- Basic skills in alphanumeric data entry and 10-key operation.
- Ability to work outdoors regularly and handle exposure to variable weather, risk of electrical shock, heights, chemicals, and moderate noise levels.
- Physical demands include frequent walking, handling objects, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, and various positions like stooping or crawling.
Additional Information
- Must complete an online Civil Service exam after application deadline; exam invitation sent via applicant email.
- Role is not exempt from Civil Service regulations but does not require random drug screening or residency.
- Responsible for organization's property worth up to $150,000 occasionally, requiring care to prevent loss or damage.
- Job performance entails routine decision-making with periodic supervision.
- Frequent public contact with the need for tactful communication.
- Exposure to outdoor work environment with specific physical and mental demands.
- Ability to write clearly and operate meter reading equipment effectively.
