Role overview
The Statewide Child Protection Litigation Office (CPLO) is seeking a paralegal to support solicitors who deliver legal advice, manage cases, and represent the child protection program. Based with the Metropolitan West Melbourne CPLO team and reporting to the Team Leader, Child Protection Litigation Support, this role contributes to the statewide paralegal function by handling file and record administration, coordinating court listings, managing case allocations, arranging barrister briefings, and assisting with legal correspondence.
You will also help maintain data across systems such as LEX, SharePoint, OurBriefings, the Children's Court of Victoria systems, and the Case Management System (CMS), and support the preparation of matter management reports. The position involves regular contact with a broad range of stakeholders and may require travel to different Children's Court locations to assist legal teams.
Key duties
- Support office operations by entering and maintaining data in LEX, SharePoint and other systems, preparing matter management reports, processing and following up invoices, and helping ensure external legal expenditure stays within approved budgets.
- Respond to enquiries, provide prompt guidance where appropriate, and follow up on outstanding matters, including redirecting incoming mail and requests to the right people.
- Assist solicitors with child protection litigation work, including drafting forms, documents, correspondence and other material needed for proceedings.
- Help organise and deliver barrister briefings for matters before the Children's Court, Family Court and other relevant jurisdictions.
Working style and stakeholder engagement
Success in this role depends on strong attention to detail, effective teamwork, and the ability to communicate with tact and sensitivity. You will be supporting a wide range of staff and interacting with external stakeholders from varied organisations.
Application process
Applicants should review the position description for full details. Applications are to be submitted online, with attachments accepted in DOC, DOCX, PDF, TXT or RTF formats. Applicants must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a current valid work permit or visa. Work eligibility will be verified during recruitment. The preferred candidate will also need to complete pre-employment checks, including a national police check and misconduct screening.
