Ranger (Fixed Term)

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated individual to join our tight-knit North Canterbury team located in Arthur’s Pass National Park. This fixed-term position runs until June 2027 and focuses on managing visitor assets such as huts, tracks, and heritage sites within Arthur’s Pass National Park and the surrounding areas including the State Highway 73 campground and amenities from Kura Tāwhiti to Otira. The primary goal is ensuring visitor safety and delivering a high-quality experience to all visitors and tourists.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and manage backcountry tracks and huts, which may require trips lasting up to five days depending on the season.
• Conduct maintenance and repairs on frontcountry tracks and structures.
• Operate small machinery, including chainsaws and scrub cutters.
• Oversee the upkeep of conservation campsites, picnic areas, car parks, toilets, and water supply systems.
• Manage visitor risk actively to enhance safety.
• Perform office tasks such as data entry, information management, and utilizing Microsoft Office applications.

Required Skills and Experience

• A passion for the outdoors and practical problem-solving abilities.
• Good physical fitness coupled with experience or practical knowledge of working in backcountry settings.
• General skills in infrastructure maintenance, including basic carpentry and plumbing.
• Comfort with technology and computers.
• Strong interpersonal skills to engage confidently with diverse visitors.
• A keen interest in conservation and New Zealand's natural and cultural heritage management.
• Possession of a full New Zealand driver’s license; Class 2 license is an advantage.
• Ability to collaborate effectively as a team member to achieve objectives and solve challenges.

Desirable Attributes

• Experience using small plant machinery such as chainsaws and scrub cutters.
• Building and construction expertise.
• Current First Aid certification.
• Cultural competency, including experience working with mana whenua and understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori.

Additional Information

Salary

The salary range for this role is from $61,189 to $67,446 annually, with the starting pay dependent on the candidate’s skills and experience.
