Overview of the Role at IBM Confluent
Join IBM as a Senior Software Engineer focused on backend development to tackle complex and varied challenges. You will contribute to building essential cloud infrastructure and services that support Confluent's multi-tenant, multi-cloud platform. Your work impacts components including Connect, Apache Flink, Kafka, and more, aimed at enabling innovative business opportunities across Confluent Cloud.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain critical backend infrastructure characterized by scalability, performance, and resilience which form the backbone of the Connect Cloud Platform.
- Create orchestration systems including auto-scaling and lifecycle management necessary for reliably running thousands of distributed Kafka Connect tasks within a multi-tenant cloud environment.
- Address technical challenges around resource isolation, performance, and security to ensure a robust and secure shared platform for diverse workloads.
- Troubleshoot and debug complex environments involving microservices, Kubernetes, containerization, and virtualization technologies to quickly resolve issues.
- Maintain operational excellence by ensuring services are prepared to meet strict service level agreements relating to availability and performance.
- Proactively identify and implement improvements architecturally, procedurally, and operationally to continuously enhance the platform.
Educational and Experience Requirements
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
- 8+ years of professional experience in designing, developing, scaling, and maintaining backend production systems.
- Proficient in major programming languages such as Java, Go, C/C++, or Python, with strong algorithmic skills.
- Hands-on experience in deploying distributed systems and microservices with tools like Kubernetes and Helm.
- Demonstrated ability in operational excellence and managing large-scale production services.
- Strong communication skills, with a commitment to quality, code reviews, documentation, and fostering team success and mentorship.
- Preferred background includes proven delivery of highly available, low-latency systems and expertise in distributed systems engineering.
