Software Engineer - Azure Storage

About the Role

The Microsoft Azure Storage team is responsible for building a highly scalable and universally accessible cloud storage platform that currently operates at Exascale (Exabytes of data) with plans to advance toward Zettascale (Zettabytes of data) over the next decade. The Ultra Disk team within Azure Storage focuses on delivering state-of-the-art block storage solutions optimized for the most demanding cloud workloads. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining efficient block storage systems that can handle enormous data volumes.

You will collaborate across multiple teams to engineer storage solutions that ensure superior performance, reliability, and data durability. Your responsibilities include writing well-structured, efficient, and scalable code, as well as documenting technical processes, defining API specifications, and establishing operational protocols. This position supports work-life balance by providing up to 50% telecommuting options.

Primary Responsibilities

• Engage with relevant stakeholders to gather and analyze user requirements for feature sets.
• Identify design dependencies and contribute to technical documentation with minimal supervision.
• Develop and implement product, service, or feature code, leveraging reusable components wherever feasible.
• Assist in decomposing complex tasks into manageable units and provide time estimates.
• Serve as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), monitoring system health and addressing issues related to service degradation or interruptions, including restoring service for straightforward problems upon approval.
• Keep current with industry advancements to enhance product availability, reliability, performance, and scalability while promoting consistent monitoring and operational standards at scale.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proficiency in coding with languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
• Ability to comply with Microsoft's security screening protocols, including passing a cloud background check at hiring and biennially thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field plus at least 1 year of relevant software engineering experience.
• Or a Master’s degree with relevant coding experience in the languages mentioned above.
• Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing large-scale distributed systems (1+ year).
• Background in cloud backend development and operations, emphasizing performance, reliability, fault tolerance, and scalability (1+ year).
