Role Overview
The Warehouse Chemist is charged with the safe and regulatory-compliant handling of chemicals and hazardous materials within a warehouse setting. This position ensures the proper receipt, inspection, classification, storage, handling, and disposal of dangerous substances, aligning with both local and international safety standards. The individual will act as a technical consultant supporting warehouse teams to reduce risks, maintain compliance, and foster continuous improvement in chemical management processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Confirm and verify chemicals and hazardous goods upon arrival to guarantee adherence to purchase criteria and legal standards.
- Maintain secure storage protocols, ensuring correct segregation and safe handling and transportation of chemicals following prescribed safety guidelines.
- Regularly audit chemical storage areas, recommending necessary improvements to mitigate safety and environmental hazards.
- Keep updated and precise records including inventory status, shelf life, Storage Data Sheets (SDS), and compliance documents.
- Evaluate chemical compatibility and conduct risk assessments to uphold warehouse safety.
- Oversee disposal procedures for expired or hazardous chemicals in line with environmental legislation.
- Educate warehouse personnel through training on chemical safety, hazard handling, personal protective equipment, and emergency responses.
- Work collaboratively with Procurement, Health, Safety and Environment teams, Logistics, and authorities to ensure compliance, aid audits, investigate incidents, and promote ongoing enhancements in chemical management.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Chemical Technology, or a related scientific field.
- At least four years of experience in chemical warehousing, hazardous material management, laboratory, or industrial chemical sectors.
- Extensive understanding of chemical characteristics, hazard classification, and proper handling methods for dangerous materials.
- Knowledge of regulations such as Globally Harmonized System (GHS), IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, ADR, and local regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and apply safe storage and segregation protocols.
- Competency in chemical risk assessments, incident analysis, and implementing corrective measures.
- A working knowledge of warehouse operations, inventory control systems, hazardous waste management, and ensuring environmental compliance.
- Strong skills in communication, analysis, problem-solving, documentation, and proficiency with Microsoft Office and warehouse management software.
