Business Data Analyst

Position Overview

The Government of Alberta's Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services is seeking a dedicated Business Data Analyst based in Edmonton. This permanent full-time role involves working 36.25 hours weekly to support the Housing Division and Alberta Social Housing Corporation branch in delivering IT and reporting solutions that enhance housing accessibility and supports across Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with program teams to capture, clarify, and define reporting and information requirements.
• Document business needs into clear user stories and development tasks for reporting solutions.
• Identify data sources and assess data completeness and reporting limitations.
• Create and maintain straightforward reports and dashboards using Power BI, adhering to established reporting standards and visualization best practices.
• Configure data queries and perform transformations to ensure accurate and reliable reporting output.
• Test and validate reports to confirm quality and usability in line with client needs.
• Provide operational support by handling reporting-related service requests, troubleshooting issues, and tracking enhancements.
• Assist technical and analytical teams by preparing data, supporting testing, and managing documentation.
• Communicate report functionalities and respond effectively to client inquiries, delivering training and user guides as necessary.
• Build strong client relationships and promote adoption of standardized reporting methods.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• University degree related to computer science, information systems, or business analytics, plus two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in Power BI and Microsoft Fabrics for business intelligence and data analysis.
• Experience in gathering, documenting, and interpreting business requirements to aid reporting and operations.
• Skill in report/dashboard development, maintenance, and data visualization.
• Competency in analyzing data trends to support informed decision-making.
• Strong knowledge of data validation from multiple sources and reporting accuracy.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Organized and capable of balancing multiple priorities in client-centric environments.
• Experience working collaboratively with users and responding to operational requests.

Preferred Skills and Assets

• Prior experience designing and maintaining Power BI reporting solutions.
• Knowledge of SQL or other data query languages.
• Understanding of data visualization concepts and reporting best practices.
• Certifications or training in Data Analysis, Business Intelligence, or related fields.
• Experience creating documentation such as user guides and training manuals.
• Familiarity with Agile or Scrum project methodologies.
• Background in government, public sector, or social services environments.

Work Schedule and Additional Information

The role operates Monday through Friday from 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM. A security clearance including a criminal records check may be required for final candidates. Candidates are responsible for any travel costs or fees related to document procurement.
