About the Role
Yomali is expanding its in-house legal team by adding a Corporate Counsel to support the General Counsel and shape the company's legal function from the ground up. This position is critical in managing the day-to-day legal tasks, allowing the General Counsel to concentrate on strategic initiatives. It offers an opportunity to define and develop the legal framework within a fast-growing, privately held multinational business.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the complete contract lifecycle for commercial, vendor, procurement, and customer agreements throughout Yomali's various businesses.
- Provide hands-on HR and employment legal support, including preparing offer letters, addressing policy inquiries, and guiding disciplinary or termination procedures, referring complex or international matters to the General Counsel or external counsel as needed.
- Act as the primary contact for consumer complaints and regulatory investigations, including those by state attorneys general, escalating litigation and external counsel involvement when warranted.
- Handle corporate housekeeping tasks such as maintaining entities, drafting corporate resolutions, and administering basic trademark and intellectual property processes.
- Create and update contract templates, develop playbooks, and implement self-service legal tools to empower the business to handle routine legal matters independently.
- Collaborate as a responsive legal partner with HR, marketing, operations, and product teams by engaging proactively in business initiatives.
- Identify potential legal risks and propose clear recommendations to the General Counsel, taking increasing ownership as the legal department matures.
Candidate Profile
- Holds a Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree plus qualification and license to practice as an attorney, solicitor, or barrister in US, Canada, England & Wales, or Ireland.
- Brings at least four years of generalist in-house counsel experience, preferably within consumer-facing or technology companies, with significant exposure to commercial contracts.
- Proficient in drafting and negotiating a high volume of commercial and vendor agreements independently.
- Demonstrates foundational knowledge of employment law, including drafting offer letters and managing terminations; familiarity with multi-jurisdiction employment matters is an asset.
- Comfortable establishing new processes and frameworks in the absence of formal legal playbooks.
- Exhibits strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of providing clear advice, resolving issues when possible, and knowing when to escalate.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience handling consumer complaints and regulatory inquiries such as those involving Attorney General offices or Better Business Bureau.
- Background at consumer-facing ecommerce, marketplace, subscription, or consumer SaaS firms.
- Knowledge of consumer protection, marketing, subscription services, payments, data privacy, and ecommerce regulatory compliance.
- Basic experience with trademark, intellectual property matters, or data privacy.
- Proven ability to design templates, playbooks, and self-service tools for growing legal departments.
- Comfort working within the legal and regulatory environments of US, Canada, UK, and Ireland.
Working Environment and Culture
The ideal candidate thrives in situations with ambiguity and complexity, asking insightful questions and presenting multiple actionable options rather than waiting for perfect clarity. This role requires ownership of business outcomes beyond traditional advisory functions and suits those eager to make a tangible impact on the legal function’s development.
What Makes This Position Attractive
- Competitive compensation aligned with location and experience.
- Opportunity to shape a newly created legal function from its foundation.
- Mentorship from an experienced General Counsel who fosters a collaborative and supportive environment.
- Clear potential for professional growth as the team and company expand.
- Flexible work location options including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland.
Interview Process
- Preliminary discussion with the talent acquisition team.
- Interview with the General Counsel.
- Panel interview with cross-functional team representatives.
- Final interview with senior leadership.
