- Make sure any change to the approved well plan is cleared by the OIM and documented by the client representative in writing.
- Coordinate with the OIM, Night Tool Pusher, and client representative on drilling progress, keep the driller updated on program goals, and communicate any plan changes.
- Take over the driller’s console when operational needs require it.

- Support and supervise the drilling crew at the worksite, ensuring adequate circulation time, stable well conditions during trips, proper handling of the BHA, and prompt response to hole problems.
- Run the drilling unit in line with company drilling and well control manuals, including reviewing and approving drilling-related permits to work.
Well control and emergency readiness
- Ensure well control measures are in place according to operational requirements and support well-kill operations when needed.
- Track well control parameters closely to spot warning signs early and react quickly.
- Maintain and test well control equipment regularly to keep it ready and effective at all times.
- Carry out well control calculations such as mud weight increase, initial and final circulating pressures, and stroke counts.
- Serve as part of the installation emergency response team as defined in the emergency plan and company procedures.
- Ensure the crew is trained on emergency actions and that well control and safety drills are conducted and recorded as required.
Equipment, materials, and rig move support
- Support the OIM/Night Tool Pusher in confirming adequate stock of parts and materials for drilling and associated work under contract requirements.
- Oversee planned maintenance and repairs for drilling systems including draw works, mud pumps, top drive, rotary table, and BOP, with proper documentation.
- Help prepare the rig for tow-out by making sure the cantilever, rig floor, and drilling equipment are secured correctly before the move.
Client coordination and reporting
- Build and maintain productive working relationships with other departments, third-party personnel, and client representatives.
- Handle client requests related to materials, equipment, and manpower once management approval has been obtained.
- Keep accurate logs and records and submit required reports on time in line with company procedures and regulatory expectations.
- Prepare daily drilling reports, equipment status updates, and incident reports to capture operational performance and activity details.
Team leadership and development
- Brief the team clearly on duties, responsibilities, and safety precautions before work begins.
- Coach, develop, and train team members to support safe and effective operations.
- Identify opportunities for growth and help team members advance their skills and careers.
- Ensure the team receives the training needed to work safely, including on-the-job coaching, classroom training, and participation in drills and exercises.
- Actively support ADES’s Competency Assurance Program.
- Assess team performance regularly, provide fair feedback, and help strengthen a structured performance management culture through the ADVANCE process.
Education and experience
The role requires a high school education or a vocational/technical qualification. Candidates must have at least 12 years of drilling and workover experience with reputable drilling contractors, including time served as an Assistant Driller and Driller.
