About the Department
The Department of Internal Affairs is integral to the lives of all New Zealanders, delivering vital services and outcomes that matter significantly. The Communications Group within the Department is a dynamic and diverse team responsible for programme communications, media relations, and support for official visits and events, functioning in a fast-paced and highly visible environment.
Role Overview
This senior leadership role requires heading the Communications Group and playing a pivotal role at the executive level. The General Manager will partner closely with the Secretary of Internal Affairs and the Executive Leadership Team to craft and promote the Department’s narrative both internally and externally, thereby enhancing and protecting the organisation’s profile.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for the Department ensuring consistency and effectiveness of messaging.
- Oversee internal and external communications aligned with organisational and secretariat initiatives.
- Lead a team of specialised communications professionals to deliver a unified, high-performing communication function.
- Manage a varied portfolio including significant programmes, media relations, and large-scale public events.
Experience and Qualifications
- Extensive leadership experience in communications, ideally within large or complex public sector organisations or comparable private sector contexts.
- Established capability in advising on complex strategic communications issues.
- Demonstrated success navigating and contributing within diverse and multifaceted organisations.
- Proven track record in delivering high-quality, strategic communications guidance.
- Ability to lead and cultivate high-achieving communications teams.
