Job description

About the Organization

Mercy Corps is a globally recognized humanitarian organization driven by the vision of creating a better world. Operating across more than 40 countries, it partners with various entities to empower communities to overcome crises and build enduring resilience. Since 2004, Mercy Corps has been active in Ethiopia, collaborating with civil society, academia, the private sector, and government to improve lives and livelihoods for over five million people. Its efforts focus on market-driven solutions, peacebuilding, natural resource management, and integrated humanitarian aid across multiple regions including Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Oromia, Somali, SNNPR, Dire Dawa, and Addis Ababa.

Program Context

In collaboration with the World Food Programme, Mercy Corps Ethiopia implements a comprehensive climate-resilient food security initiative in Ethiopia's drought-prone Dollo Ado and Dollo Bay woredas. This multi-faceted program seeks to strengthen local food systems and enhance nutritional and economic outcomes for refugees and host communities. By intertwining agricultural support, financial services, cooperative building, and climate-smart farming practices—including solar irrigation and regenerative agriculture—the project empowers beneficiaries towards sustainable development and economic independence.

Position Overview

The Knowledge Management & Learning Specialist is a pivotal member of the Dollo Ado program team, tasked with documenting program impacts and effectively disseminating success stories to varied audiences. The role involves developing and executing a communications strategy at area level, capacity building in storytelling and media production, and collaborating with national communication teams to extend external engagement.

  • Innovate communication approaches and foster inclusive exchange of ideas.
  • Develop and align area communications strategy with organizational goals at local, regional, and global levels.
  • Ensure compliance with donor and project communication and branding standards.
  • Monitor and advise on integrating communication plans into program workflows.
  • Coordinate official visits and events involving government, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Serve as lead brand custodian maintaining quality standards across materials and events.
  • Build communications competencies within teams, covering donor rules and technical skills such as photography and video production.
  • Collaborate with regional and headquarters communication focal points for message development and media responses.
  • Facilitate journalist visits and strengthen institutional communication linkages.
  • Lead team development, set performance expectations, and foster a respectful, accountable work environment.
  • Oversee compliance with financial and contractual obligations related to communication activities.
  • Promote gender equality, diversity, and social inclusion in all communications and program management aspects.

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, Language and Literature, or related fields. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of four years’ progressive experience in communication and knowledge management within donor-funded development programs.
  • Strong command of English with excellent writing, editing, and public speaking skills; fluency in Somali appreciated.
  • Ability to distill complex information into accessible messaging targeted to various audiences.
  • Proficiency in graphic design, photo and video editing.
  • Experience in agriculture or economic development projects preferred.
