Overview
Join the Optimus geartrain manufacturing team as a motivated Mechanical Equipment Design Engineer. This role demands expertise in high-precision equipment construction related to gearboxes, electric motors, or other rotating machinery industries. Collaborate extensively with cross-functional teams including Design, Quality, Production, Sustaining, Automation, and Supply Chain to develop volume-ready designs and manufacturing processes. Your focus will be on creating production lines that manufacture gearboxes and driving scalable design and fabrication methods to build the equipment that makes such machines.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of manufacturing equipment throughout all phases, from concept through assembly and production deployment.
- Devise comprehensive machine design concepts for specialized manufacturing tools and systems.
- Create detailed engineering drawings for custom automated tooling, fixtures, robotic end-effectors, and mechanisms.
- Perform in-depth engineering analyses including manual calculations and finite element analysis of mechanical components.
- Select and integrate commercial hardware such as sensors, motors, and pneumatic or hydraulic actuators.
- Conduct design reviews for internal and cross-functional team feedback and facilitate communication between actuator, gearbox, design, and manufacturing engineering groups.
- Lead technical dialogues with subsystem and equipment suppliers.
- Produce precise drawings and coordinate with internal and external machine shops for fabricating machined parts, weldments, extrusions, and sheet metal components.
- Support technician teams with assembly and commissioning of new equipment.
- Validate equipment functionality and durability, preparing comprehensive documentation and equipment handover packages.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Broad experience in mechanical engineering with hands-on involvement in machine design and manufacturing.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD and Product Data Management software; familiarity with CATIA or Siemens NX is a plus.
- Experience designing automation equipment and custom machinery, including use of precision instruments like laser alignment tools.
- Knowledge of diverse manufacturing methods such as assembly, fastening, dispensing, and laser welding.
- Solid grasp of drafting standards and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
- Experience with rotating machinery and bearing systems design and troubleshooting.
- Ability to specify systems based on torque and power curves of electric motors and gearbox-integrated systems.
- Competence in finite element analysis for structural assessments.
- Experience conducting experimental modal analysis to evaluate machine structure stiffness.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
- Professional level command of English communication, written and oral.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally on a regular basis.
