Role Overview

As an Early Career Software Engineer, you will be involved in shaping essential user experiences and enhancing how users realize value from Notion. You'll take on meaningful engineering challenges with growing independence, contributing to projects that impact millions. In this capacity, you will make technical decisions, own your initiatives, and collaborate closely with teams across design, product management, and data science to influence the future of workplace collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy product features from initial concept through launch and iterative refinement informed by user feedback.
• Enhance the performance, reliability, and quality of core experiences utilized by a vast user base.
• Conduct experiments targeting user activation, retention, collaborative usage, and revenue growth in partnership with design and research teams.
• Develop internal tools and optimize platforms to enable engineering teams to deliver efficiently and securely.
• Contribute positively to team standards, maintain code quality, and foster a culture of continual improvement and balanced decision making.

Potential Areas of Contribution

• Core product features including the editor, database functions, sharing capabilities, fueling millions of workflows daily.
• Integration and advancement of AI and automation functionalities to maximize Notion’s power and contextual effectiveness.
• Driving growth and onboarding initiatives to enhance user discovery and engagement with Notion.
• Building and maintaining backend platform systems ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.

Qualifications

• Under two years of professional software engineering experience with a solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems, combined with pragmatic, user-focused problem solving.
• Holistic and thoughtful approach to issues, able to grasp context, anticipate real-world effects, handle ambiguity, and develop clean, effective solutions balancing technical and business needs.
• Technology applied with a focus on direct user impact rather than tool-centric enthusiasm, keeping current with AI-assisted development tools, and selecting solutions that offer the most value.
• Strong self-direction, proactive communication, and the ability to independently identify and advance project requirements while collaborating effectively.
• Preferred: Experience with React, TypeScript, Node.js, Postgres, and Elasticsearch; a strong interest in the societal implications of technology; appreciation of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace and Alan Kay.

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers highly competitive financial compensation including equity participation and comprehensive benefits. Based on factors like location, role complexity, and candidate qualification, the estimated salary range for San Francisco is $130,000 to $150,000 annually.
