Job Description

This role entails a blend of professional, supervisory, administrative, technical, and operational responsibilities in public safety, within the Fire Rescue Department’s Office of the Fire Marshal. You will oversee strategic fire prevention and life safety initiatives, ensuring enforcement of fire and life safety codes, supervising fire safety inspections, reviewing fire plans for new constructions, investigating fire origins and causes, collecting fire data, developing fire code legislation, and educating the public on safety measures. Additional tasks include preparation of maps, recommending changes in fire safety laws and office policies.

Key Responsibilities

Establish and supervise the Office of the Fire Marshal’s goals, annual work programs, staffing, and scheduling.
Prepare or oversee monthly and annual reports for the Fire Chief.
Directly supervise assigned staff, conduct evaluations, and provide training.
Assign duties related to inspections, plan reviews, educational outreach, and report maintenance.
Identify hazards, engage with builders, owners, occupants to implement corrective measures, and conduct community fire safety presentations.
Enforce fire and life safety codes and ensure timely correction of violations.
Review and inspect new construction plans and existing commercial properties for compliance.
Investigate suspicious or fatal fires, collect evidence, interview involved parties, and provide expert testimony if needed.
Coordinate with architects, engineers, officials, professional bodies, citizen groups, and public on fire safety issues.
Promote positive public relations and partnerships across divisions, departments, agencies, and community groups.
Collaborate on projects with other County departments supporting public safety.
Represent the County at Technical Review Committee and Compliance Code Board meetings.
Ensure personnel compliance with County and Department policies and procedures.
Analyze staff performance and implement programs to improve efficiency.
Manage the Office of the Fire Marshal’s budget aligning to adopted allocations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field from an accredited U.S. institution.
Minimum five years of experience in Fire Service Management, Fire Prevention, or Inspection Management.
Possess and maintain Florida Fire Safety Inspector I Certification or approved equivalent; if not certified, must obtain within one year of hiring.
Valid Florida Driver’s License.
Potential necessity to obtain Florida Firefighter Minimum Standards, Emergency Medical Technician, or Paramedic Certification as per the Fire Chief’s discretion.
In absence of degree, equivalent additional relevant experience considered on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in related fields from accredited U.S. institutions.
Completion of the Executive Fire Officer Program by the U.S. Fire Administration/National Fire Academy.
Fire Protection Engineer Certification.

Compensation

Salary Grade 026 ranges from $118,705.06 to $189,945.60 annually, placement dependent on education and experience.
