About Our Client
Our client is a prominent designer and manufacturer specializing in furniture solutions tailored for workplaces, educational settings, healthcare facilities, and various commercial environments. With over six decades of experience, the company blends thoughtful design, quality manufacturing, and practical solutions to enhance how people work, learn, and care.
Role Overview
We are looking for a detail-focused and driven Interior Designer to become part of our client's Toronto-based design team. The role's central responsibility is to handle furniture specification and space planning by transforming project requirements and floor plans into practical, visually appealing, and precise furniture arrangements through AutoCAD, sketches, product choice, and other visual aids.
This role suits candidates who balance strong aesthetic sensibilities with technical precision. You should enjoy the creative design aspects as well as the meticulousness needed to structure information, select the right products and finishes, develop exact plans, and guide projects systematically.
Applications are welcome from early-career designers with impressive portfolios and relevant internship or work experience, as well as from seasoned commercial designers eager to leverage their expertise in a stable, in-house furniture design setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Create effective furniture layouts and space plans aligned with floor plans, project needs, and available products.
- Develop and revise precise AutoCAD drafts as project demands evolve.
- Choose and specify suitable furniture items, setups, materials, colors, and finishes.
- Convert design concepts into clear sketches, plans, product selections, and presentation content.
- Produce or assist in generating interior renderings and visualizations to communicate proposed designs.
- Utilize sound space-planning principles considering scale, circulation, function, and furniture-environment interaction.
- Maintain organized, accurate project documents including drawings, specifications, product data, and updates.
- Review work thoroughly to ensure completeness, accuracy, visual harmony, and alignment with project goals.
- Collaborate with the internal design and business teams to clarify project needs, resolve design issues, and provide practical solutions.
- Build in-depth knowledge of the client's furniture collections, applications, materials, finishes, and design standards.
- Handle multiple projects and deadlines while preserving detail orientation and design quality.
- Stay updated on trends and advancements in commercial interiors, furniture, digital design, visualization, and workplace planning.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Interior Design or a related applied design field.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Demonstrated skill in space planning and understanding furniture's functional role within interiors.
- Excellent aesthetic judgment favoring timeless design over fleeting trends.
- Ability to effectively communicate design ideas through drawings, sketches, product choices, and discussion.
- Strong organizational capabilities with a process-oriented mindset toward managing drawings, details, and changes.
- Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate results.
- Fluent in written and spoken English communication.
- Comfortable with digital design tools and product specification systems.
- A portfolio showcasing relevant interior design, space planning, furniture-related, or commercial projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education from an accredited or recognized applied interior design program.
- Previous internship, co-op, summer placement, or professional interior design experience.
- Background working with commercial interiors, workplace design, office or contract furniture, furniture specification, or within furniture manufacturing or dealership.
- Proficiency with SketchUp.
- Strong skills in interior rendering or visualizations.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Enscape, V-Ray, CET Designer, 2020 CAP, Revit, or other relevant design/specification technologies.
- Familiarity with furniture systems, FF&E selection, materials, fabrics, finishes, and product applications.
- Ability to rapidly conceptualize space-planning through sketching.
