Software Engineer - JavaScript and Frontend UI Frameworks

Role Overview

Join FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg as a Software Engineer, focusing on JavaScript and frontend UI frameworks to maintain and develop software projects including the ClusterCockpit Monitoring Framework and the HPC User Portal.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain software projects such as the ClusterCockpit Monitoring Framework and HPC User Portal.
• Manage deployment and administration of various web applications including ClusterCockpit, HPC User Portal, Moodle, Hedgedoc, and Discourse.
• Oversee the internal HPC Single Sign-On (SSO) infrastructure and administer the KeyCloak instance.
• Handle renewal of TLS certificates and JWT tokens.
• Create comprehensive documentation for software products, especially ClusterCockpit, targeting both internal HPC teams and end users.
• Provide user support primarily related to ClusterCockpit and the HPC portal.
• Represent the team at national and international scientific conferences and actively participate in organizing workshops and tutorials.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in a technical or natural science discipline.
• Proficient in web backend programming with Golang and Java Grails.
• Expertise in JavaScript, specifically with frontend UI frameworks such as Svelte and Vue.
• Strong experience with relational databases (SQL – SQLite and PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (primarily MongoDB).
• Extensive knowledge of container-based application deployment and development using Docker, Docker Compose, and Portainer.
• Skillful in designing and implementing REST and GraphQL APIs.
• Good understanding of the NATS messaging framework.
• Experience in server and server service administration.
• Proficient with Shibboleth SSO, KeyCloak, and the DFN AAI SSO infrastructure.
• Excellent software engineering capabilities for open-source projects including version control systems and collaborative development tools (git, make, Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment with GitLab and GitHub).
• Relevant IT user support experience, especially in HPC environments.
• Familiarity with HPC system usage, administration, and operation (Slurm, Modules, Spack).
• Knowledge of shell and scripting languages including Python, Bash, and Perl.
• Programming experience in at least one HPC-relevant language such as C/C++ or Fortran.
• Near-native German language proficiency and fluent English speaking and writing skills.
• Independent work approach, strong teamwork skills, and enthusiasm for new challenges.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience with ticketing systems, specifically OTRS.
• Familiarity with the organizational structure of FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.
