The Neutron team is responsible for the development and operation of the new large-scale rocket Neutron, including launch and test sites. This involves designing and testing structures and components, engine ignition, and establishing operational launch facilities in the US.

Role Overview

As a Structural Analyst I/II based in Auckland, New Zealand, you will contribute to the analysis, validation, and enhancement of Structural components across our Launch Vehicles, Space Systems, and related Space Components. You will be joining a driven team committed to impactful space missions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyze static and dynamic test and flight data, including sensor selection, validation, and effects from various environmental inputs such as vibration, shock, acoustics, and thermal conditions.
  • Execute and document detailed structural analyses including validation of finite element models, material selections, and optimizing mass through trade-off studies.
  • Conduct simulations covering static loads, modal analysis, vibration, buckling, and thermal effects, cooperating closely with design and test engineers to ensure design integrity and structural safety margins.
  • Establish test requirements, support subsystem and component testing, and lead technical projects that span multiple teams and engineering disciplines.
  • Develop and implement innovative tools and best practices while mentoring colleagues in technical skills and systems navigation.
  • Provide optimal engineering solutions and uphold high standards of excellence within the team.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Between 1 and 3 years of relevant industrial experience, preferably in aerospace, automotive, or marine sectors.
  • Strong physics-driven problem-solving capabilities.
  • In-depth understanding of structural mechanics principles.
  • Proficiency in one or more common structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as ANSYS, Nastran, Abaqus, Optistruct, or Hyperworks.
  • Experience with NX CAD and/or Teamcenter or similar CAD/PLM systems, particularly for model interrogation and defeaturing in support of analyses.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including conventional machining and additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Ability to accurately predict component lifespan and structural margins related to ductile metal failure, fatigue, and fracture mechanics.
  • Expertise in vibroacoustic modeling and analysis methodologies.
  • Experience handling sensor selection and processing data from accelerometers, strain gauges, thermocouples, among others.
  • Familiarity with various structural test techniques such as modal correlation, random vibration, sine burst, equivalent sine inputs, force notching, shock tests, and fixture evaluation.
  • Programming skills, especially proficiency in Python for engineering applications.
  • Proven project and program management experience including defining requirements, maintaining timelines, cross-disciplinary coordination, conducting reviews, and reporting to executives and clients.
  • Ability to work effectively under shifting deadlines and in high-pressure environments, both independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication skills combined with the ability to foster positive working relationships internally and externally.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Experience with structural analysis of composite materials, including laminate and joint designs and characterization under environmental impacts.
  • Knowledge of linear and nonlinear buckling, notably shell buckling.
  • Expertise in acoustic analysis and testing procedures.
  • Understanding of propellant dynamics modeling and mitigation such as slosh and pogo effects.
  • Familiarity with coupled loads analysis techniques.
  • Experience with nonlinear material simulation including aspects like metal plasticity, elastomers, and adhesive bonding.
  • Knowledge of applicable aerospace industry standards such as MIL-STD-1540, GSFC-STD-7000, ECSS-E-HB-32, and NASA-STD-5001.
