About the Role

The Trainer/Consultant role at UCLA is part of the ongoing collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Families (DCFS) through the LADCFS+UCLA Academy of Workforce Excellence (AWE). This initiative engages universities with master’s degree social work programs to provide comprehensive training to DCFS staff across various levels, including new hire Children's Social Workers (CSWs), current CSWs, Supervising CSWs (SCSWs), public health nurses, managers, administrators, case aides, and other stakeholders.

The purpose of this role is to leverage expert knowledge in child welfare legal practice and adult learning methodologies to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate specialized training curricula and simulation-based learning experiences. The trainer provides instructional leadership, coaching, and consultation to ensure excellent training quality and effective learning outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and present curricula on varied child welfare topics tailored to DCFS employees at multiple organizational tiers.
• Lead seminars aimed at DCFS interns, supporting their professional development.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in child welfare legal systems, guiding training content and delivery.
• Coach and provide consultation to trainers and stakeholders to maintain high standards in training effectiveness.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

• Subject matter expertise accumulated over at least 10 years creating, developing, and instructing on legal matters related to public child welfare (mandatory).
• Proven experience in curriculum design and training delivery (preferred).
• Comprehensive understanding of the child welfare legal framework, including dependency law, court procedures, evidentiary standards, timelines, and statutory mandates, with ability to interpret and implement complex legal content (mandatory).
• Strong dedication to independent work completion and robust interpersonal, teamwork, and collaboration skills (preferred).
• Expertise in adult learning theory, curriculum development approaches, and training assessment methods, applied effectively in instructional settings (mandatory).
• Superior communication, presentation, engagement, and facilitation skills (mandatory).
• Familiarity with Los Angeles DCFS policies, practices, mission, and models (preferred).
• Commitment to cultural humility, diversity, and culturally competent practice (mandatory).
• Experience in coaching and mentoring roles (mandatory).
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines (mandatory).
• Excellent writing, editing, and grammar skills, alongside strong proficiency with PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and general computer literacy (mandatory).
• Educational credentials include at minimum a Bachelor’s degree in political science, economics, public administration, business administration, or related field (mandatory).
• Master’s degree in social work, social science, or related field (preferred).
• Licenses or advanced degrees such as LCSW, DSW, or Juris Doctor (JD) are advantageous (preferred).

Additional Employment Conditions

• Successful candidates must pass a satisfactory background check and a Live Scan background check prior to employment.
• The role requires verification through E-Verify due to federal funding conditions.
• Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
• Proof of COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations is required.

Working Hours

The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Compensation

Salaries are competitive and determined based on factors such as experience, education, credentials, and organizational budget. Benefits commence from the first day of employment.
