Role Overview

We are seeking a Development Engineer to join the Developer Services team within Strategy & Planning. This dynamic and diverse role involves providing comprehensive engineering support throughout the development lifecycle to make certain that new water and wastewater assets are properly designed, constructed, and connected in compliance with Watercare’s stringent standards.

The role requires collaboration with developers, engineering consultants, Auckland Council, and internal Watercare teams to facilitate quality development across Tāmaki Makaurau. Duties vary daily, including design reviews, compliance assessments, resource consent assistance, and verification of new assets for long-term operational integrity.

Key Responsibilities

• Offer expert technical guidance and support for new development inquiries.
• Conduct peer reviews of resource consent applications and verify network capacity availability.
• Review and approve Engineering Plan Approval (EPA) designs.
• Ensure third-party constructed assets comply with Watercare’s Code of Practice.
• Evaluate and authorize new water and wastewater connections, including commercial and fire-supply links.
• Confirm requirements for backflow prevention and appropriate meter sizing.
• Manage asset acceptance documentation and compliance certification processes.
• Forge and maintain strong collaborative relationships with developers, council personnel, and contractors.
• Contribute to continuous team improvement and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
• Advocate and uphold positive health, safety, and wellbeing standards.

Candidate Profile

• Holds a Bachelor of Engineering or an equivalent tertiary qualification.
• Possesses 3 to 5 years of engineering experience, preferably in civil, mechanical, or water/wastewater infrastructure sectors.
• Demonstrates strong communication skills and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
• Has experience in asset management, development procedures, or construction oversight roles.
• Shows meticulous attention to detail and embraces a continuous improvement mindset.
• Proficient in interpreting engineering plans, standards, and technical data.
• Exhibits a customer-focused approach and effective problem-solving abilities.
• Displays commercial awareness relevant to the engineering and infrastructure field.
