Position Responsibilities
As an intern, you will leverage statistics and computer science methodologies to address challenging healthcare topics such as diagnostic analytics, image and signal processing, natural language processing, scheduling, risk and outcome analysis, socio-economic behavior modeling, and process enhancements to streamline patient referrals. You will work with extensive clinical and external datasets in various formats. The role involves mastering the data science lifecycle from data collection and engineering to exploratory analysis, feature design, algorithm creation, and deployment within clinical or business settings. You will be expected to develop analytical questions, conduct hypothesis testing, optimize and deploy algorithms, and incorporate stakeholder feedback promptly. A flexible mindset and the ability to apply techniques from other industries to healthcare are crucial, as is effective communication and teamwork. Ideal candidates have coursework and project experience in data science and demonstrable enthusiasm such as participating in data competitions, regardless of prior industry employment.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled or recent graduate from undergraduate or graduate programs in Computer Science, IT, Data Science, Physics, Statistics/Biostatistics, or related quantitative fields.
- Academic or project-based exposure to data science tools and methodologies.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence concepts and related coursework, including programming, machine learning, graph theory, algorithms, statistics, SQL, and linear algebra.
- Experience with programming languages is advantageous.
- Prior work with data science tools and structured data algorithm development is preferred.
- Experience handling unstructured data such as natural language, images, genetics, or signal processing (e.g., EKG) is desirable.
- Knowledge of C, C++, Java, or other system-level programming and software engineering processes is a plus.
- Web-based data visualization skills using frameworks like Angular or D3 are also considered favorably.
Additional Information
- This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship, and the employer does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.
- The position is classified as nonexempt.
- Hourly pay is set at $25 per hour with no benefits eligibility.
- Work schedule is full time (80 hours biweekly), Monday to Friday, typically from 8 AM to 5 PM, with considerations for academic calendars.
- This is a hybrid work arrangement requiring residence within 100 miles of the Rochester, MN campus for monthly onsite attendance.
