Overview
The King County Library System is looking for Library Technical Assistants to support various branches across the county. These positions offer diverse schedules and locations, which will be tailored during the hiring process. Candidates can express their preferences for schedule and location.
Role Purpose
Library Technical Assistants are key contributors to the smooth functioning of library operations and delivering excellent customer service. Responsibilities include helping patrons and staff with circulation and account inquiries, processing library materials, and assisting users with technology.
Primary Duties
- Help patrons and employees with circulation services and basic library information via phone and in person, register new patrons, and address account related questions.
- Manage processing of materials coming in and out, using both manual methods and Automated Material Handling equipment, checking for damaged items or items needing special attention.
- Shelve materials appropriately and manage inventory through running reports and handling check-ins.
- Assist patrons with library technology, including hardware and software guidance and troubleshooting.
- Report equipment malfunctions or maintenance requirements.
- Support scheduling and usage of library spaces like meeting and study rooms.
- Handle incidents involving patrons by enforcing the Code of Conduct or redirecting as appropriate.
- Participate in the promotion and display of library collections and programs.
- Perform cash handling and register duties including reconciling and depositing funds.
- Assist with facility operations including opening, maintenance, and closing activities, plus ordering necessary supplies.
Additional Responsibilities
- Champion intellectual freedom and respond to related queries or refer concerns appropriately.
- Engage actively in internal teams and projects.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least one year of experience in a library environment or similar service-oriented setting.
- Any equivalent education and experience combination that equips the candidate with necessary skills will be considered.
Skills & Knowledge
- Competence with basic computer operations and troubleshooting.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience supporting computer hardware and peripheral devices.
- Ability to sort materials alphanumerically and understand the Dewey Decimal Classification.
- Strong customer service approach and good communication skills for diverse audiences.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to handle high volume tasks accurately within deadlines.
- Responsive and flexible in environments requiring frequent task changes and interruptions.
- Excellent collaborative skills to build positive working relationships.
Physical and Work Environment
- Work involves standing and walking throughout shifts with occasional sitting.
- Regular reaching, bending, twisting, and manual handling activities; lifting up to 35 lbs occasionally.
- Keyboard use may be intermittent but includes frequent finger movements.
- Work performed in typical library settings; staff must be prepared to handle behavior-related challenges with support.
- Shifts may include mornings, evenings, weekends, and variable schedules across multiple locations.
