Overview
The Material Engineer position is an on-site, full-time role located at King Salman International Airport (KSIA) Terminal 6 substructure project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This role functions as the technical expert overseeing all construction materials to ensure compliance, testing, and certification conform to project and international standards. The position reports to the QA/QC Manager and oversees laboratory staff while collaborating closely with procurement, engineering, and batching plant teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage on-site laboratory operations, ensuring equipment maintenance, calibration, and certification are carried out per ASTM, SASO, and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
- Establish and enforce testing protocols and frequencies for soils, aggregates, concrete, steel reinforcement, grout, and waterproofing materials in line with Inspection & Test Plans.
- Review and approve all lab testing results and upload Material Test Reports and Certificates of Compliance to Autodesk Construction Cloud within required deadlines.
- Coordinate with third-party laboratories for specialized testing and prepare for external audits.
- Lead concrete mix design development and approval, focusing on mass concrete raft foundations, optimizing for durability and thermal properties in the local climate.
- Supervise batching plant operations, managing batch tolerance adjustments according to ambient conditions.
- Monitor concrete strength and thermal data trends to implement corrective actions if deviations arise from specified performance targets.
- Review and validate supplier material submittals, supporting procurement in sourcing approval and conducting pre-shipment inspections or audits as required.
- Manage investigations into material non-conformities and chair Material Review Board meetings to determine corrective decisions on rejected materials.
- Ensure all materials and procedures comply with Bechtel Project Specifications, ACI, ASTM, and Saudi Building Code standards.
- Prepare Technical Queries and respond to Requests for Information related to material specifications or substitutions.
- Collaborate with off-site precast yards to verify quality control and curing methods for precast components.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or Concrete Technology; Master’s degree preferred.
- Mandatory Saudi Council of Engineers registration (Grade A/Major).
- Certifications include ACI Concrete Mix Design Technician or Concrete Plant Manager, Laboratory Testing Technician (Grade I & II), LEED accreditation preferred, and ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor is advantageous.
- At least 10–12 years of progressive experience in materials engineering within heavy civil infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience with major international airport terminal projects and mass concrete pours beyond 2.0m thickness, including thermal control management.
- Strong experience managing on-site or commercial materials laboratories and familiarity with Bechtel or equivalent Tier-1 PMC project management systems.
- Minimum of 5 years working experience in Saudi Arabia or GCC region with knowledge of local standards and material sources.
Technical Skills
- Comprehensive expertise in ACI 301/318, ASTM standards (C39, C94, C143, C231), AASHTO, SBC 301, and SASO compliance.
- Proficient in MS Excel for statistical data analysis, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and concrete mix design software such as StonemontQC or CommandQC.
- Hands-on operational knowledge of laboratory testing equipment, including compression testing machines and rapid chloride permeability testers.
