About the Company
South Staffordshire Water operates as two regulated water-only brands: Cambridge Water and South Staffs Water. The business is privately owned and serves customers across two regions.
The supply area covers nearly 1.3 million people and extends from the edge of Ashbourne in the north to Halesowen in the south, and from Burton-on-Trent in the east to Kinver in the west.
Role Overview
This field-based position is ideal for someone who enjoys working independently, meeting customers, and spending time outdoors. As a Meter Reader, you will help make sure water bills are accurate and customers receive a dependable service.
The job is based in Walsall, West Midlands, and involves travel across the Staffordshire area. You will be given a company vehicle, access to a strong benefits package, and the backing of a team-focused organisation that values both employees and customers.
Working Arrangement
This is a permanent full-time role with 37.5 working hours each week.
Salary is £25,550 per year, plus company benefits and a company vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
- Visit customer properties across the region and take accurate readings from water meters.
- Finish all allocated meter-reading routes within each month to meet Guaranteed Standards Scheme (GSS) obligations.
- Record meter information correctly and keep company systems updated.
- Interact with customers in a courteous, professional way and respond to general queries.
- Spot and escalate unusual usage trends, possible leaks, and any defective or damaged meters.
- Identify vulnerable customers when necessary and provide appropriate support.
- Act as a positive representative of South Staffs Water and Cambridge Water.
- Manage daily workloads efficiently while maintaining accuracy and strong customer service.
Requirements
- A full UK driving licence is essential.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to deal with customers face to face.
- Ability to work on your own as well as within a field-based team structure.
- High levels of attention to detail when capturing and logging information.
- A flexible mindset and willingness to work outdoors in different weather conditions.
- Previous experience in a field-based role is helpful but not mandatory.
