Role overview
FedEx Canada is looking for a part-time, on-site package handler in Prince George, British Columbia. The role focuses on the safe and efficient physical handling of parcels, including loading, unloading, sorting, moving, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing items by hand.
Package handlers may be assigned to, or rotate through, different operational stations such as loader, unloader, palletizer, scanner, weigh and key (SWAK), quality assurance (QA), switcher, and related positions.
Specialized assignments
Some package handler assignments require additional training and specific duties beyond the standard role.
- Package Handler Trainer: Trains other package handlers in loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning methods to help keep parcel movement safe and efficient across the operation.
- Package Handler – Air: Carries out a multi-step parcel inspection process to ensure that air-restricted parcels are not loaded into an air container.
Core duties
- Uses the hand-to-surface method for all parcel handling.
- Loads and unloads parcels from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading racks.
- Performs repeated lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of parcels for about 3 to 5 hours at a time, with the possibility of working one or more shifts each day.
- Identifies the correct conveyor path by scanning parcels, reading labels and charts, checking numbers, and remembering details to sort items properly.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Additional responsibilities for trainer role
- Trains new package handlers in efficient unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, small-item handling, SWAK, and handling of non-conveyable parcels.
- Provides extra coaching to other package handlers when the supervisor determines more instruction is needed.
- Shares feedback on proper parcel processing techniques when required.
- Reinforces dock safety standards among peer package handlers.
- Understands and demonstrates all required processes and procedures by example.
- Updates managers on conditions during sorting so operational efficiency decisions can be made.
- Supports the rollout of new parcel-handling procedures and methods.
- Continues regular loading, unloading, palletizing, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling while also training others.
Additional responsibilities for air role
- Scans each parcel in the air consolidation area and checks for hazardous materials or ORM-D designation.
- Loads parcels into the unit load device when applicable.
- Completes restricted parcel return-to-shipper notifications in SCMS for air-restricted parcels.
- Regularly loads, unloads, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls parcels.
Minimum education and experience
No minimum education is required, and no prior experience is required for the base role.
For specialized assignments, package handler experience with FedEx Express Corporation is preferred:
- Package Handler Trainer: 6 months of experience preferred.
- Package Handler – Air: 6 months of experience preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Ability to understand and follow work instructions and safety procedures.
- Ability to distinguish numbers and information accurately to sort parcels correctly.
- Comfort using basic tools and equipment such as roller racks, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well in a fast-moving team environment.
- Switcher roles require a valid driver’s licence and a clean DOT record.
- Package Handler Trainers must be able to train several peers at the same time.
- Package Handler – Air must complete and maintain FedEx Ground Airlift Consolidation Gateway training and government-required indirect air carrier training, with annual recertification.
Working conditions
- Work may involve exposure to both hot and cold temperatures.
- The environment can be very noisy.
- Must be able to lift and carry between 5 and 50 pounds.
- No travel is expected.
Schedule and pay
The shift starts at 6:00 am. Typical shifts are 3 to 4 hours long, and availability is required Monday through Saturday. The wage is $20.00 per hour.
