Freelance Textile Designer - Remote Contract

Role Overview

This position focuses on crafting an exclusive saree collection that rejuvenates the historic Jamdani supplementary weft weaving art form. You will partner closely with master weavers from recognized Jamdani clusters to blend modern geometric motifs and contemporary color schemes while honoring this UNESCO-endorsed heritage. The project aims to transform traditional floral motifs into minimalist geometric interpretations suitable for current fashion trends, alongside exploring innovative fabric textures using varied yarn combinations like cotton, mulmul, muslin, and linen. The candidate must harmonize creative ingenuity with technical expertise to fuse tradition with modern design sensibilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Design original saree concepts incorporating modern geometric patterns inspired by classic Jamdani designs
• Produce detailed design guidelines and curated color palettes for each creation
• Work collaboratively with master weavers to ensure faithful execution of designs into woven samples
• Investigate a variety of yarn blends to develop distinctive fabric textures and finishes
• Manage the sampling phase, offering constructive feedback for improvements
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of the design workflow and communicate effectively with artisan groups

Candidate Requirements

• Demonstrable experience in textile or fashion design complemented by a robust portfolio highlighting handloom or heritage textile projects
• In-depth knowledge of Jamdani weaving techniques and Indian textile cultural traditions
• Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or related tools
• Strong skills in color theory, pattern creation, and fabric engineering
• Capability to collaborate effectively with artisans and adapt designs based on technical insights
• Excellent communication and project coordination abilities
• Ability to collaborate remotely, with occasional preference for onsite visits to weaving clusters
