Role overview
North Bay Regional Health Centre is hiring a Personal Support Worker for the Complex Continuing Care - Dementia Care Unit B1 within the Seniors’ Mental Health Program in North Bay, Ontario. This team supports older adults and their caregivers across northeast Ontario by providing assessment, intervention, and ongoing support for age-related mental health conditions. The goal is to help people stay in their own homes, retirement homes, or long-term care settings whenever possible and reduce avoidable psychiatric hospitalization.
The current competition has already closed, but applications are still being accepted until a suitable candidate is chosen.
Qualifications and professional background
- An Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma, Secondary School Graduation Diploma, or an equivalent credential is required.
- Applicants must hold a Personal Support Worker certificate, a Health Care Aide certificate, or have completed at least the second semester of an accredited nursing program.
- A valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate is required.
- A current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) certificate is required.
- A U-First certificate is required.
Skills and abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships are essential.
- Clear written and spoken communication skills are required.
- The person in this role must work well as part of an interdisciplinary health-care team.
- Ability to function with little direct supervision is important.
- The role requires the physical capacity to support direct care for medical patients.
- Successful candidates should be self-motivated, adaptable, organized, patient, tactful, and sensitive to the needs of older adults.
- A strong commitment to ongoing learning and professional development is expected.
- The ability to calm and de-escalate patients is required.
- Basic computer proficiency is necessary.
- Candidates must actively support personal safety, as well as the safety of coworkers, patients, volunteers, and visitors.
- A commitment to safety culture and preventing adverse health events is required.
- A reliable attendance and work history is expected.
- Advanced English/French bilingual ability is required. Unilingual applicants may still be considered if the French requirement has been met or no successful bilingual applicant is available; a formal French assessment will be used to confirm proficiency.

Pay, benefits, and all other working conditions are governed by the CUPE 139 Collective Agreement.
