Senior Software Engineer - User Platform (Java)

About The Role and Team

Join a pioneering team dedicated to evolving how people experience design worldwide. This position is based in Sydney with a flexible hybrid work model, blending remote work with in-person collaboration at our uniquely designed campus in Surry Hills. As a Backend Engineer in the User Platform team, you will be integral in developing and scaling Canva’s core User Platform system that supports user management for millions globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively within a backend-focused engineering team to expand and enhance the User Platform, a foundational component of our microservices architecture.
• Own and optimize high-performance backend systems responsible for authenticating, authorizing, and managing users, avatars, groups, and teams.
• Participate in envisioning, designing, planning, building, and maintaining reusable platform components.
• Engage with stakeholders to gather requirements, align delivery timelines, and maximize value for customers.
• Focus on enhancing user experience especially for Enterprise and Education customers with large team needs.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Proven ability to work effectively in teams with strong communication skills.
• Deep understanding of computer science fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, architectural patterns, and software design principles.
• Strong expertise in designing, building, and operating scalable, high-performance Java backend services.
• A problem-solving mindset with excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with authentication and authorization system architectures is highly advantageous.
• Proficiency with SQL databases.
• Familiarity with DynamoDB is considered a plus.
