Position Summary

The Assistant Store Manager role at our Brantford retail location supports the Store Manager by overseeing daily store operations. This role ensures that the thrift store both generates vital funds and positively impacts the local community.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the safety of customers, staff, and volunteers within the store premises.
  • Assist in designing store layouts to enhance the store’s appearance.
  • Address customer concerns and complaints promptly and courteously.
  • Support cash handling processes in line with policies, including securing nightly deposits.
  • Manage inventory control by overseeing donation sorting, pricing, and stocking.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff during the Store Manager's absence.
  • Participate in recruitment activities including interviewing and hiring.
  • Conduct orientation, training, and performance feedback adhering to divisional and territorial standards.
  • Assist in coordinating sales events, promotions, and auctions.
  • Organize staff schedules, meetings, and training sessions.
  • Perform sorting, pricing, and stocking of various merchandise.

Health and Safety

  • Comply with OH&S Act and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.
  • Help ensure staff understand and can execute emergency procedures.
  • Follow appropriate protocols in case of workplace injuries or illnesses, including incident investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Relationships

Internal relations include working closely with the Store Manager, staff, and volunteers. Externally, you will interact with the community and vendors.

Management and Financial Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Store Manager.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers when required.
  • Manage moderate material resources and minor financial duties, including limited cash handling.
  • Contribute limited input to budgeting or revenue forecasting.

Working Conditions

  • This is a permanent, full-time position based in a retail store environment.
  • Work hours vary weekly and include weekdays, evenings, and weekends requiring flexibility.
  • Role involves prolonged standing and frequent movements such as twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching.
  • Regular lifting or moving of loads up to 30 pounds is required.
  • Travel may be necessary to attend meetings and other engagements.
  • Safety footwear must be worn at all times in store and distribution center locations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary education or specialized training in Retail Management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of two years’ relevant retail experience, preferably with secondhand merchandise and in a unionized setting.
  • Basic accounting and cash handling expertise.
  • Familiarity with cash registers, bank deposits, and report generation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with Salvation Army-specific systems is advantageous.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong teamwork skills to guide staff, resolve conflicts, and manage donations appropriately.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Resourceful with time management and delegation capabilities.
  • Administrative competence.
  • Compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental approach in team environments.
  • Knowledge of pricing, sorting procedures, merchandise display, and promotional methods.
  • Ability to pass appropriate background and screening checks.

Compensation and Accommodation

The pay range starts between $23.10 to $25 per hour, with a target hiring range up to $28.88 and a maximum of $34.65 per hour, adjusted for experience and qualifications. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request to support candidates’ needs.
