Electrical Engineer - Data Centers

Overview

This role, located in Ireland, involves providing electrical engineering expertise to support the acquisition, development, and readiness of data center infrastructure tailored for next-generation AI cloud environments. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the evaluation of electrical engineering aspects for potential data center sites, including colocation and build-to-suit projects.
• Conduct thorough electrical due diligence examining power capacity, utility access, distribution systems, and infrastructure readiness.
• Develop and define technical strategies related to power distribution topology, electrical capacity, redundancy, and equipment choices.
• Assess utility interconnections, on-site power generation, UPS configurations, including redundancy systems such as N, N+1, and 2N architectures.
• Provide recommendations on project feasibility based on electrical assessments, risks, and requirements.
• Analyze utility capacity, substation needs, interconnection durations, and infrastructure limitations impacting project timelines.
• Review electrical equipment availability, lead times, dependencies on suppliers, and financial implications relevant to schedules and budgets.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to establish design strategies, commissioning specifications, and readiness criteria.
• Offer technical guidance on switchgear, generators, UPS systems, and overall electrical configurations for candidate data center sites.
• Ensure documentation of electrical design assumptions and commitments during transitions from acquisition to development phases.
• Identify and mitigate electrical risks before they affect construction or project delivery milestones.
• Work closely with stakeholders including utility providers, consultants, suppliers, and commissioning partners to ensure successful project completion.

Candidate Requirements

• Minimum of eight years' experience in electrical engineering focused on data centers, power systems design, or mission-critical electrical infrastructure.
• Extensive knowledge of medium-voltage distribution, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, and utility interconnections.
• Proven expertise in conducting electrical feasibility and due diligence for data center facilities prior to commercial commitment.
• Strong understanding of electrical capacity planning, redundancy designs, capital expenditure considerations, and equipment selection.
• Preferably experienced in hyperscale data centers, AI infrastructure, or comparably large-scale technology environments.
• Familiarity with EPMS/BMS controls integration and electrical commissioning processes.
• Additional background in utility interconnection agreements and power infrastructure planning is advantageous.
• A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) license are a plus.
• Excellent communication and presentation abilities capable of translating complex technical topics for executive decision-making.
• Adept at working autonomously in ambiguous environments while developing scalable technical frameworks.
