Position Overview
This entry-level role in the Commodities department supports management of large North American natural gas, electricity, and carbon portfolios. As a Junior Energy Analyst, recent graduates can expect to gain hands-on experience with commodity trading markets, risk management approaches, and energy portfolio oversight. Additionally, this role provides insight into global energy fundamentals, policy shifts, and regulatory developments shaping the industry’s future. The position also encourages cross-functional collaboration, enabling a holistic understanding of energy landscapes and strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate client onboarding to ensure seamless integration.
- Support clients in reporting annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of their facilities.
- Contribute to developing and introducing new products and services.
- Manage natural gas nominations via utility and transportation portals to verify delivery commitments.
- Perform analyses on utility rates and rebates and advise clients on potential portfolio impacts.
- Conduct risk assessments on procurement strategies for natural gas and electricity and effectively communicate findings to senior management and clients.
- Assist interdisciplinary teams with planning and implementing energy procurement, risk mitigation, sustainability efforts, regulatory compliance, and market analysis initiatives aligned with corporate goals.
- Translate complex datasets into clear and relevant reports for management and team knowledge sharing.
- Prepare comprehensive commodity reports for clients covering budget forecasts, consumption and portfolio performance, accruals, and customized components.
- Optimize client settings for natural gas Daily Contract Quantity (DCQ) and large volume distribution contracts.
- Stay current with policies, regulations, programs, and market trends affecting U.S. and Canadian energy sectors.
- Contribute insights to weekly commodity market intelligence and assist with requests for proposals (RFPs).
- Participate in energy conferences and networking events for ongoing professional development.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics, mathematics, or related disciplines.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects, including post-implementation phases.
- Familiarity with strategic planning, data management, financial/economic modeling, performance evaluation, and risk management principles.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access.
- Competence in establishing standardized reporting routines and managing data effectively.
- Adaptable with a proactive eagerness to learn and grow professionally.
- High ethical standards and integrity in professional conduct.
- Experience with Power BI and Python considered a significant advantage.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Exposure to the energy sector is beneficial but not mandatory.
