Supply Chain Overview
The Supply Chain team at Rocket Lab ensures seamless flow of materials, components, and products within the company. Their work directly affects the success of satellite and rocket programs by preparing assembly kits, managing inventory, handling shipments, procuring direct and indirect materials, and assuring compliance and quality.
Role Overview: Manager - Purchasing
Based in Auckland, New Zealand, the Purchasing Manager leads the direct materials procurement team supporting the launch and space systems sectors, covering R&D through production ramp-up. Reporting to the Director of Procurement (NZ), this role focuses on machining commodity procurement involving aluminum, composites, and 3D printed materials for Rocket Lab programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a procurement team targeting raw materials like aluminum, composites, and printed materials for Launch and Space programs.
- Manage procurement to fulfill production demands and facilitate rapid engineering development.
- Develop a global commodity strategy to achieve superior cost, quality, and delivery standards linked to company growth.
- Negotiate pricing based on detailed cost models and collaborate with engineering to influence design choices.
- Represent Rocket Lab externally with suppliers and oversee supplier relations, including performance scoring and dispute resolution.
- Work with suppliers and internal teams on sourcing strategies that optimize cost and quality while enabling business expansion.
- Resolve scheduling, inventory, material shortages, delivery, cost, and quality issues with relevant parties.
- Monitor supplier performance metrics including quality, on-time delivery, and prices.
- Act as a primary liaison among Supply Chain, business leadership, engineering, accounting, and manufacturing teams.
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of procurement and planning data in ERP systems.
- Conduct in-depth market research to discover new capabilities and potential partnerships aligned with business goals.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum eight years of purchasing experience including leadership in a fast-paced environment; a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience totaling 12+ years.
- Demonstrated teamwork in cross-functional settings to meet organizational objectives.
- Proven track record in sourcing, onboarding new suppliers, and setting contractual pricing agreements.
- Experience in defining team strategies and developing operational plans for long-term success.
- Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with effective prioritization abilities.
- Excellent communication, both verbal and written.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain performance in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
- Background in aerospace, automotive, or disruptive manufacturing sectors.
- Experience working in a rapid growth environment.
- Familiarity with AS9100 standards and U.S. export controls including ITAR and EAR.
Additional Information
This position entails extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, and computer work, with occasional exposure to moderate noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.
