Overview
This is an opportunity to do meaningful work with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), supporting landlords, tenants, body corporates, and unit owners to settle disputes in practical and fair ways. The role sits within the Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service and is suited to someone who enjoys helping people, building trust, and working toward balanced outcomes.
There is 1 permanent vacancy based in Manukau or Central Auckland. The salary range is $77,359 to $96,453 per year, plus KiwiSaver and wellness benefits.
About the Role
As a Tenancy Mediator, you will help guide people through disputes under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 and the Unit Titles Act 2010. You will work with a collaborative team to provide information, practical guidance, and support that helps parties reach agreement and improve relationships.
Mediation is delivered through phone calls, video meetings, and face-to-face sessions, allowing you to connect people with suitable solutions early and in a way that fits their needs. The service is focused on being accessible, respectful, and community-oriented, particularly for Māori and Pasifika whānau.
What You Will Do
- Support landlords, tenants, body corporates, and unit owners in resolving tenancy-related disputes.
- Use mediation, facilitation, problem-solving, and active listening to help people find common ground.
- Provide guidance and information within the framework of relevant legislation.
- Handle discussions professionally, including in challenging or emotionally difficult situations.
- Work across phone, video, and in-person mediation formats as required.
- Contribute to a service approach that is culturally safe, relationship-focused, and responsive to diverse communities.
Skills and Experience
The ideal person will bring a strong people focus, sound judgement, and the confidence to work with a wide range of customers and stakeholders.
This role would suit someone with experience in mediation, facilitation, community advocacy, or a closely related field, although a willingness to learn is also valued.
