About the Role
The New Statesman seeks a creative and meticulous Picture Editor to manage and enhance photographic and illustrative content across its various platforms including print, digital, and social media. The successful candidate will have a robust visual acuity aligned with the publication's editorial objectives, exceptional organisational capabilities, and a keen interest in politics and culture.
In this pivotal role, you will collaborate with photographers, illustrators, editors, and writers to cultivate a distinct visual identity for one of the UK's foremost weekly magazines, delivering high-quality, engaging journalism.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for commissioning and producing photography for both print and digital channels, managing image rights, budgets, archives, and ensuring all visual elements adhere to elevated editorial and production standards. Close cooperation with editorial, design, and production teams is essential.
Required Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years' experience in commissioning photography within a UK media organization, strong editorial judgement, proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, and comprehensive knowledge of image licensing and rights. Exceptional organisational skills, attention to detail, experience managing multiple projects under strict deadlines, and a broad professional network of photographers and photo agencies including international contacts are key. An interest in politics, culture, and current affairs is expected.
Desirable Attributes
Experience with editorial illustration, political cartoons, trends in photography and visual storytelling, familiarity with digital asset management and editorial workflows, and an academic background in Photography, Visual Arts or a related field are advantageous.
