Overview
The City of Baldwin Park invites applicants interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to join as a Public Safety Trainee. This entry-level, non-sworn, at-will position involves comprehensive training through a 26-week California POST Basic Police Academy to earn a Peace Officer certificate and specialized departmental instruction on criminal justice, California laws, law enforcement techniques, first aid, physical fitness, and community policing.
This part-time role does not include benefits. Employment is at the discretion of the Police Chief and may be terminated without cause or appeal.

Position Details
Public Safety Trainees attend the POST Basic Academy in a non-sworn capacity. Successful completion and Police Chief approval can lead to appointment as a full-time Police Officer.
Responsibilities
- Complete and graduate the POST certified basic police academy.
- Learn proper handling and maintenance of firearms and related equipment.
- Understand and meet Police Officer standards per California State Government Code.
- Perform other duties as assigned, typically non-sworn within the department.
Qualifications and Abilities
- Basic literacy skills: reading, writing, and spelling.
- Effective oral and written communication capabilities.
- Ability to think clearly and act decisively in emergencies.
- Skills to manage conflicts constructively and reach resolutions.
- Comprehension and interpretation of laws and regulations.
- Proper use and care of firearms.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum age of 20.5 at application and 21 upon academy graduation.
- Valid California Class C Driver License.
- US citizenship or legal authorization to work in the US.
- Ability to meet POST background requirements and pass the City's background check.
Physical Requirements
- Capability to perform physical activities such as sitting, standing, walking, running, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, climbing, and bending.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull weights up to 50 pounds.
- Endure prolonged physical exertion during academy training.
- Exposure to various training conditions including weather elements, noise, confined spaces, and potential hazards.
Selection Procedure
- Applications will be screened; qualified candidates invited to the next steps.
- Steps may involve passing the POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLET-B), Physical Agility Test (PAT), and Oral Board Interview.
- Applicants must thoroughly complete forms and provide requested certifications.
- Scores and tests from other agencies may be accepted if meeting specific recency and documentation requirements.
- A comprehensive background investigation is mandatory.
