Position overview
The recreation worker will design and deliver activity-based programs that support the physical and mental health, wellness, and recovery of clients. This role involves working both independently and alongside clients, families, and an interdisciplinary team in line with Prairie Mountain Health’s vision, mission, and values.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 under Manitoba standards.
- A current Food Handler Training Certificate Level 1, or a willingness to complete it within 6 months.
- Background working with older adults and/or people living with physical or cognitive disabilities.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
- At least 2 years of recent, relevant experience providing direct client support in a health care or recovery setting.
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, plus internet-based and other information technology tools.
- Well-developed organizational skills and the ability to work on your own.
- Proven problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Adaptability and comfort with changing methods and procedures.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to safeguard and respect confidentiality.
- Capacity to carry out the role’s duties consistently and regularly.
- Respect for and ability to support a culturally diverse population.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, clients, and interdisciplinary team members.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver recreation and activity programs for clients and participants.
- Run group-based activities and events.
- Provide guidance and instruction for selected tasks to build skills and confidence.
- Share client progress updates with interdisciplinary team members and adjust plans when needed.
- Create engaging individual and group activities based on client interests, needs, and preferences.
- Work with external partners when needed to develop activities and recreational events.
- Ensure all events remain client-centred and support physical and mental wellbeing.
- Follow any diagnosed conditions or medical restrictions during activities and recreation sessions.
- Prepare the monthly recreation and activity calendar.
- Arrange, source, and adapt the space, tools, and supplies needed for scheduled activities.
- Maintain required records, documentation, and statistics.
- Track program statistics and submit monthly reports.
- Keep supply records up to date and order replacements as required to maintain inventory.
- Assess for possible crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques where needed.
- Use, store, and maintain equipment safely and properly.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
