Metrobloks designs and manages high-density colocation infrastructure in key urban metro areas across North America and Europe. Their sites are optimized to support AI workloads, hyperscale deployments, and enterprise applications requiring low latency, delivering power densities over 150 kW per rack with reliability up to 99.999%. Active locations include Miami, Phoenix, Detroit, Kansas City, Indianapolis, McAllen, and Paris.
Role Overview
The Senior Electrical Engineer will play a pivotal technical role in designing, developing, and overseeing electrical systems from high-voltage down to low voltage for Metrobloks' data center projects. Responsibilities span from concept design through commissioning, covering medium-voltage distribution, integration of substations, UPS systems, generators, and critical power architectures for projects ranging from 24 MW up to over 1 GW of utility service capacity. This position requires cross-functional coordination with engineering, business development, real estate, and finance teams to ensure modular, scalable, and rapidly deployable electrical infrastructure.
Location and Travel
This role is based in designated Metrobloks markets with a hybrid working model, preferably located in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, or Kansas City, with business travel up to 25%.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical engineering for new build and adaptive reuse data centers, handling service voltages between 13.2 kV and 230 kV.
- Create and review single-line diagrams, perform load calculations, fault current and arc flash studies, and develop power distribution plans.
- Design medium-voltage switchgear, including substations, transformer specifications, and bus duct routing.
- Specify UPS, static transfer switches, PDUs, and generator paralleling equipment for critical power configurations like N+1 and 2N.
- Conduct short-circuit and coordination studies ensuring compliance with NFPA 70, NFPA 110, IEEE, and local jurisdiction regulations.
- Manage utility interconnection studies and negotiate capacity, voltage levels, and feed counts with utilities.
- Coordinate with transmission and distribution utilities on service design, metering, and protective relays.
- Support site feasibility assessments focusing on power availability, utility timelines, and energization risks.
- Collaborate with Real Estate and Development teams to align utility requirements with site layout and phasing.
- Oversee electrical construction as owner’s representative by reviewing submittals, addressing RFIs, and handling scope adjustments.
- Develop and execute commissioning plans and integrated system testing procedures to ensure successful energization.
- Perform site inspections at critical milestones to verify installations match design specifications.
- Work closely with mechanical engineers on redundancy topologies, power density planning, cooling interactions, and PUE optimization.
- Provide technical expertise for design standards, capital expenditure modeling, and value engineering with CIO and development teams.
- Assist in vendor qualification and procurement for critical electrical equipment, assessing risks related to lead times.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
- At least eight years of electrical engineering experience, with four or more years in mission-critical or data center environments.
- Proven expertise with medium-voltage power distribution (13.2 kV to 34.5 kV), including substation and switchgear design.
- Experience sizing and specifying critical power equipment such as UPS units, generators, and automatic transfer switches.
- Proficiency using power system analysis software like ETAP, EasyPower, SKM PowerTools, or equivalent tools.
- Comprehensive knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 110, IEEE standards, and local authority requirements.
- Capability to review and critique all aspects of electrical designs including power, grounding, lighting, EPMCS, and fire alarms.
- Experience in managing utility interconnection and energization processes.
- Adaptable, proactive self-starter able to handle multiple concurrent projects and changing priorities in fast-paced environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer license or willingness to obtain within 12 months.
- Experience working on hyperscale or multi-tenant colocation projects with 20 MW+ critical IT loads.
- Knowledge of behind-the-meter generation solutions, including natural gas and grid-parallel systems.
- Familiarity with Uptime Institute Tier standards and customer SLA obligations.
- Experience with modular or prefabricated electrical infrastructure components like switchgear modules and packaged substations.
- Exposure to DCIM platforms and power monitoring systems.
- Proven track record leading utility coordination and service delivery for large industrial or data center projects.
- Ability to conduct reliability studies.
- Understanding of telecommunications infrastructure and security system design.
