Software Engineering Contractor (JavaScript/TypeScript)

Role overview

This remote contracting opportunity is for an experienced software engineer who can help train and assess next-generation AI systems by working through realistic engineering problems. The work is focused on practical software development across backend, full-stack, systems, and infrastructure contexts.

The role is suited to someone who is comfortable exploring unfamiliar codebases, making sound engineering judgments, and clearly explaining technical choices. Prior AI experience is not necessary; strong engineering thinking, clear communication, and the ability to evaluate code quality and tradeoffs are the key requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Tackle challenging engineering work spanning backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems-oriented projects.
• Inspect, troubleshoot, refine, and describe code across different technical setups.
• Build or assess solutions involving APIs, databases, services, integrations, testing, and deployment processes.
• Weigh important tradeoffs related to scalability, maintainability, speed, reliability, security, and developer experience.
• Write clear technical explanations that show why an approach works and what other options were considered.
• Partner with the client team on technical reviews, implementation choices, and problem-solving tasks.
• Move quickly across new codebases, frameworks, and changing technical requirements.

Required qualifications

• At least 5 years of practical software engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on background in one or more backend or full-stack environments such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Go, Ruby, PHP, or similar technologies.
• Experience creating, supporting, or reviewing production-grade applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations.
• Solid grasp of core engineering principles, including debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and technical decision-making.
• Ability to communicate complex engineering reasoning in a clear, objective way.
• Comfort working through unfamiliar code and interpreting technical requirements.

Preferred background

• Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, containers, monitoring, or production operations.
• Familiarity with frontend frameworks like React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native.
• Evidence of open-source work, public GitHub projects, technical writing, or other strong engineering samples.
• Experience mentoring other engineers, reviewing code, or making architecture decisions.
