Overview

We are seeking an experienced Technical Sales Engineer based in Kampala, Uganda, to spearhead sales and business development activities within the industrial safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) sectors. This role involves crafting and implementing targeted territory strategies across Uganda's manufacturing, industrial, construction, mining, and oil & gas industries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a focused sales strategy tailored to the Ugandan market and its industrial sectors.
  • Initiate and cultivate business leads through cold outreach, direct site engagements, referrals, and participation in industry events.
  • Engage clients in comprehensive needs assessments and provide expert technical consultations with safety and procurement professionals.
  • Offer authoritative advice on selecting appropriate PPE according to Uganda's OSHA 2006 and related compliance requirements.
  • Prepare thorough technical proposals, bills of quantities, and competitive tender documentation.
  • Negotiate contracts to secure sales while maintaining company profit margins.
  • Achieve and exceed specified sales targets on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of Kema East Africa's extensive PPE portfolio, covering gloves, safety footwear, head/eye/face protection, apparel, hearing and respiratory equipment, and specialized safety products.
  • Advise clients on adherence to international and local safety standards, conduct product demonstrations, and perform on-site PPE audits and hazard assessments.
  • Manage key client accounts to ensure satisfaction, encourage repeat business, and facilitate contract renewals.
  • Design and implement client-specific training sessions and product inductions at their locations.
  • Proactively monitor client PPE consumption to recommend restocking, service agreements, and upgrades.
  • Carry out market intelligence activities including competitor analysis and identification of emerging opportunities within Uganda.
  • Submit detailed sales reports and maintain accurate records in CRM systems.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with procurement, logistics, and finance teams to ensure efficient order processing and forecasting.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, etc.), Occupational Health & Safety, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Postgraduate qualifications or professional HSE certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) are advantageous.
  • Additional training or certification in PPE standards such as ISO, EN, or ANSI is a plus.
  • Between 5 and 7 years of hands-on experience in technical sales within the PPE or industrial safety markets predominantly in Uganda.
  • Documented success in surpassing sales goals in Uganda’s industrial, manufacturing, or construction sectors.
  • Established professional relationships with EHS managers, procurement officers, and plant managers within Uganda.
  • Experience managing government tenders, institutional buying, and corporate supply contracts.
  • Exposure to multi-country sales operations in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda) considered beneficial.

Technical, Regulatory & Other Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of Uganda OSHA 2006, Workers Compensation Act, and UNBS standards.
  • Familiarity with international certifications including ISO 9001, EN 388, EN 166, ANSI Z87.1, NFPA 2112, and EN ISO 11612.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and CRM software.
  • Strong technical knowledge combined with a consultative and commercially oriented approach.
  • Superior communication and negotiation abilities capable of interfacing at all organizational levels.
  • Possession of a valid Ugandan driving license and ownership of reliable transportation or ability to use company transport.
  • Fluent in English and Swahili or other commonly used local business languages.
  • Readiness to undertake frequent travel across Uganda and occasional trips within the wider East African region.
