Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Bird Keeper for a 12-month fixed-term position to join our team. This full-time role involves hands-on work with Aotearoa's treasured bird species such as penguins and kiwi. The position suits individuals passionate about animal welfare and collaborative work environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive daily care, including feeding, enrichment activities, habitat upkeep, and behavioural observations.
• Monitor bird health and wellbeing, noting behavioural changes and assisting veterinary procedures as needed.
• Engage visitors by delivering keeper talks, presentations, and behind-the-scenes experiences to all age groups.
• Participate in conservation and rehabilitation efforts supporting New Zealand's native wildlife.
• Maintain high standards for animal habitats, life support systems, food preparation zones, and operational documentation.
• Collaborate with a motivated team focused on animal welfare, learning, and exceptional visitor engagement.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to animal welfare, an eye for detail, and the ability to thrive in a team-oriented and adaptive work environment.

• Prior experience in animal husbandry within zoos, aquariums, wildlife parks, or related settings.
• Qualifications in captive animal management, zoology, biology, animal science, or equivalent professional experience.
• Understanding of animal behaviour, husbandry methods, and behavioural enrichment techniques.
• Excellent communication skills for engaging diverse audiences through educational content.
• Attention to detail in monitoring, recording, and reporting observations accurately.
• Possession of a current Full New Zealand Driver Licence and willingness to work a roster including weekends, public holidays, and school holidays.

Experience with penguins, kiwi, native New Zealand bird species, conservation programmes, or working in accredited zoos or aquariums is advantageous but not mandatory.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, fixed-term role of 12 months, requiring 80 hours of work across a fortnight on a roster basis.

The role offers an annual salary package between NZD 62055 and NZD 69355 (inclusive of KiwiSaver), dependent on experience and qualifications.
