Position Overview
Concorde Education is hiring independent contractors to lead comic book creation enrichment sessions for K-12 students at various partner schools. These assignments are on-site and involve teaching elementary to high school students in after-school programs, typically spanning around 10 weeks per session.
Responsibilities
- Conduct engaging, age-appropriate lessons on comic book creation including storytelling, character design, illustration, and sequential art.
- Customize instruction to match student skill levels, available materials, site requirements, and specific program goals.
- Assist students in developing original characters, scripts, layouts, and completing comic projects, fostering creativity and collaboration.
- Ensure a safe, respectful, inclusive learning environment, selecting age-appropriate materials consistent with school policies.
- Communicate effectively with Concorde and school staff regarding needs or concerns related to assignments.
- Complete session reports after each class and comply with all site safety, visitor, emergency, and student protection procedures.
Program Topics May Include
- Character creation and visual design techniques.
- Story structure, narrative development, and scriptwriting for comics.
- Panel layout, pacing, and visual storytelling methods.
- Drawing techniques such as facial expressions, action poses, perspective, inking, coloring, and lettering.
- Project revision, editing, and completion strategies.
- Enhancing creativity, communication, and providing constructive critiques.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 60 college credits when required by the assignment or site.
- Experience in illustration, comic creation, graphic storytelling, visual arts, animation, creative writing, graphic design, or related creative fields.
- Background in teaching, tutoring, coaching, mentoring, or leading activities with school-aged children.
- Strong skills in communication, organization, classroom management, and project facilitation.
- Ability to meet assignment schedules and promptly communicate any scheduling conflicts.
- Familiarity with traditional and/or digital tools used in comic illustration.
Materials and Resources
Schools may supply art materials, digital tools, and curriculum resources. Contractors may also bring their own approved instructional materials that comply with assignment scope, safety, legality, copyright, and school guidelines. Original student work is emphasized in projects.
Compensation and Terms
Payment is typically over $50 per completed instructional hour, varying by assignment scope, experience, location, and schedule. Contractors can propose their rates during application, which Concorde may accept, counter, or decline. Payment is usually made by direct deposit mid-month following the service month, contingent upon completed assignments and agreement terms.
