Overview

Join the Waste, Recycling & Neighbourhood Service team at Barnsley Council as a Driver, a critical member of our street cleansing operations dedicated to maintaining a clean and safe environment throughout the borough. This permanent full-time position offers a salary of £26,403 to £28,142 and requires working Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week.

Role Responsibilities

• Perform operational tasks such as emptying street bins, litter picking, and removing fly-tipping in various weather conditions, involving physically and mentally demanding duties.
• Operate council vehicles without trailers and effectively use powered, mechanical, and hand tools to complete work.
• Exhibit friendly and approachable behavior, adhering to customer care policies at all times.
• Comply with all applicable legislation and health and safety standards.
• Follow set schedules and workloads to ensure service priorities are achieved.
• Assist partner services and departments during social and cultural events in the town centre when needed.
• Support the service as directed by management in meeting operational goals.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Valid UK driving license is essential.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, meeting target deadlines efficiently and effectively.
• English proficiency at a level appropriate for communication.
• Willingness to undergo a Basic Criminal Record Check and comply with drug and alcohol testing policies as this is a safety-critical role.
• Applicants must provide reasonable account of any six-month or longer periods spent abroad within the last three years.
• Must have appropriate legal work documentation ready; note that the employer cannot sponsor visas as it does not hold a Home Office license.

• Role is based at Smithies Lane Depot, subject to change based on service needs.
