Role Overview
This position involves overseeing and managing forest operations within a designated Business Area Unit (BAU), aiming to maintain high standards of quality, cost efficiency, environmental compliance, and safety. The Forester will also work to develop contractors and forest workers to meet operational goals within set deadlines while adapting to forest security needs and employing technology to maximize operational efficiency.
Terms and Conditions
Reporting to the Function Lead, this permanent role is based in Castleisland, County Kerry, with location flexibility by agreement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead contractors and forest operatives to achieve operational objectives that meet quality and financial standards.
- Foster contractor development to enhance performance and service delivery.
- Demonstrate flexibility in supporting all BAU operations to optimize geographic coverage.
- Promote a commercial mindset focused on increasing revenue and minimizing costs.
- Encourage process simplification to improve work effectiveness.
- Prioritize safety for all personnel, contractors, and visitors within the forest estate.
- Take responsibility for personal contribution and development aligned with company goals.
- Model organizational values visibly and actively.
- Prepare, plan, and phase operational activities in line with BAU needs and assign contractors appropriately.
- Support budget preparation and monitor financial forecasts and production targets to ensure alignment.
- Organize personnel and resources to complete operations timely and efficiently.
- Enforce quality control to maintain high standards via site supervision and monitoring.
- Provide timely and accurate production data to assist in tactical and operational decisions.
- Ensure meticulous work-recording and field data capture post operations.
- Maintain compliance with certification schemes, governance, codes of practice, and relevant guidelines.
- Apply forest security measures including fire control, trespass prevention, timber protection, and litter management.
- Ensure best practices and standardization are followed by the workforce and contractors to adhere to operational guidelines.
- Champion a culture of operational excellence with continuous improvement initiatives to reduce inefficiencies.
- Manage timber production to meet supply commitments.
- Provide reliable forecasts and inventory data for effective supply planning.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders to support business objectives.
- Coordinate communication within the BAU to handle stakeholder concerns seamlessly.
- Collaborate with the Estates Manager on community engagement initiatives such as tree-week and local development projects.
- Engage with Farm Partners on relevant issues through proper channels with the Estates Manager.
- Ensure recreation sites are properly maintained in accordance with the BAU’s recreation strategy.

Professional and Technical Qualifications
- Minimum Level 7 degree in Forestry or a related qualification of equivalent standard.
- Preferably over 2 years of substantial forestry operations experience at a management level.
- Demonstrated commercial awareness with an ability to optimize financial outcomes.
- Previous experience in managing personnel or contractors effectively.
- Knowledgeable about regulatory compliance, safety standards, and environmental stewardship within forestry.
