Probation Officer

Job Overview

The Probation Officer acts as a representative of the Court and will be assigned to a specific unit based on departmental needs. These units may include casework, presentence investigations or pre-dispositional report writing, intake, and court team assignments.

Key Responsibilities

• Apply and manage the Indiana Risk Assessment System in daily activities.
• Maintain consistent communication with clients, legal counsel, treatment providers, placement agencies, and other relevant parties.
• Examine documentation related to clients' legal and social backgrounds.
• Prepare and complete all necessary court documents and correspondence.
• Provide testimony in court and offer informed recommendations.
• Interview clients to clearly explain legal supervision requirements.
• Conduct field visits that comply with Indiana Office of Court Services standards.
• Coordinate efforts with counselors, treatment organizations, public and placement agencies as needed.
• Follow all policies and procedures established by the Marion Superior Court.
• Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the Chief Probation Officer while embracing the department’s team-oriented approach.

Qualifications and Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree is the minimum educational requirement.
• Prior internship experience in probation is advantageous.
• Candidates must pass the Indiana Probation Officers' Certification Examination within six months of hire.
• Additional certifications and training may be necessary for specialized departmental duties.
• Proficiency in languages such as Spanish, American Sign Language (ASL), Burmese, or others is a plus and may offer a salary bonus.

The role involves a combination of office-based tasks and fieldwork activities.
