Role Overview
This leadership position oversees end-to-end plant operations in San Diego, ensuring the site consistently delivers on product quality, food safety, employee wellbeing, and cost objectives. The role is responsible for getting the best use out of people, materials, equipment, and facilities while following company policies. It also carries accountability for factory performance through coaching, developing, and motivating a high-performing operations team. A strong employee-centered culture is expected, with an emphasis on engagement, development, and long-term satisfaction. The position also supports customer service and inventory objectives by managing purchasing, production scheduling, and product deployment, while partnering with other AFNA leaders to shape site strategy and align it with short- and long-term business goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Own factory results by leading the company’s TPM-based performance approach, including aligned goals, employee participation, root-cause analysis, countermeasures, and loss reduction.
- Lead long-term planning, capital project execution, operating budgets, budget performance, cost-reduction efforts, and total delivered cost improvements.
- Provide strong direction across safety, quality, manufacturing, maintenance, materials management, administration, employee engagement, and employee welfare.
- Work closely with corporate teams in production planning, inventory control, quality assurance, engineering, operations strategy and support, finance, purchasing, and human resources.
- Partner with R&D, marketing, and sales to coordinate product launches, production timing, and development of new products and processes.
- Own the site’s financial performance by building and managing the annual budget, controlling operating and capital spending, and supporting revenue and cost goals.
- Prepare financial, operational, and performance reports for executive leadership, including recommendations and action plans.
- Define KPIs, review them regularly with management, and report progress monthly.
- Lead initiatives that reduce losses, lower incident rates, and minimize workers’ compensation exposure.
- Protect facility and asset integrity through security, fire prevention, and prevention of property or equipment degradation.
- Build a healthy team environment where concerns are heard, employee needs are addressed, and achievements are recognized.
- Ensure food quality and safety remain as important as productivity, and collaborate with Corporate EHS and FSQA to implement standards.
- Make sure the plant complies with all applicable requirements from USDA, FDA, EPA, OSHA, CAL-OSHA, EEOC, and local agencies.
- Maintain effective communication channels across departments and organizational levels.
- Develop both salaried and hourly employees to strengthen technical capability and leadership depth.
- Support a strong company image and positive community relationships.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline such as engineering, food science, chemistry, or biology is required.
- At least 8 years of hands-on experience are needed, ideally in the food sector.
- At least 5 of those years must include plant management or operations management in a complex environment with multiple lines, high-speed/high-volume output, and continuous improvement practices.
- Experience running a food facility regulated by USDA and/or FDA is required.
- Experience with ready-to-eat facility operations is considered an advantage.
- Strong understanding of budgeting, P&L, product costing, and profitability is required.
- Ability to analyze manufacturing variances and use them to protect budget performance and plant financial results.
- Proven project management skills with the ability to prioritize, balance multiple workstreams, and stay results-focused.
- Strong leadership, communication, team-building, and people-development capabilities are essential.
- Ability to assess employee capability and delegate appropriately.
- Well-developed organization, judgment, reasoning, multitasking, policy-setting, budgeting, problem-solving, and planning skills are needed.
- Must be comfortable training, supervising, motivating, and directing employees at different levels.
- Strong floor presence and the ability to work effectively with employees across skill levels are required.
Working Conditions
The role regularly involves wet, humid, and very cold conditions. There may also be occasional vibration, and noise levels can be moderate. Personal protective equipment must be used frequently. The job is active in nature and may involve extended periods of sitting, standing, telephone work, computer work, and interaction with employees and customers. It can also involve filing tasks, frequent hand use, occasional reaching, and lifting or moving up to 10 pounds. The employee must be able to work for extended periods in hot environments up to 100 °F or cold environments down to 0 °F. Some travel is required.

Compensation and Benefits
The annual base pay range is $189,450 to $231,550, depending on experience. A 30% annual STI bonus is offered, and relocation assistance is available. Benefits are provided through the company benefits hub.
