Role Summary

The Manager of State Advocacy develops and leads proactive legislative campaigns at the state level focused on youth online safety, funding, creating welcoming environments for LGBTQ+ youth, and other key areas. This role bridges policy analysis and community action by tracking legal developments, fostering partnerships, and mobilizing advocacy efforts to protect LGBTQ+ youth interests. Additional duties include supporting defensive policy areas as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and maintain an organized daily tracking of state and federal legislative activity.
• Assist in formulating and executing strategic policy goals.
• Draft and polish policy documents, advocacy materials, and communications.
• Establish and nurture relationships with nonprofit organizations, government officials, and stakeholders to amplify advocacy.
• Represent The Trevor Project publicly at panels, conferences, and meetings speaking on LGBTQ+ youth issues.
• Inform policymakers and the community about LGBTQ+ policies and suicide prevention efforts.
• Collaborate with internal teams to synchronize advocacy initiatives.
• Manage multiple projects with detail orientation and consistent follow-through.
• Lead, mentor, and support volunteers and interns.
• Uphold ethical and equitable practices within all business operations.
• Commit to ongoing learning and knowledge sharing.
• Demonstrate effective planning, multitasking, and problem-solving within deadlines.
• Communicate and collaborate efficiently with diverse teams.
• Ensure accuracy and attention to detail in tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

• 3-5 years of experience in legislative analysis, drafting, and amendment strategy at the state level, ideally including technology and funding policies.
• Proven ability to convey complex concepts effectively across written, verbal, and presentation formats.
• Experience building and maintaining collaborative, trusting, long-term relationships internally and externally, especially working with marginalized groups including LGBTQ+, communities of color, and people with disabilities.
• Strong commitment to LGBTQ rights, youth mental health, and crisis intervention advocacy, with enthusiasm to expand support among diverse audiences.
• Proficiency in legislative tracking software with at least one year of usage experience.
• Familiar with Google Suite applications such as Docs, Sheets, and Presentations.
• Experienced in grassroots advocacy tools, including email and SMS mobilization platforms like MailChimp and texting services.
• Culturally competent with a deep understanding of LGBTQ+ and youth mental health issues, and willingness to continue learning.
• Exemplifies emotional intelligence, integrity, discretion, and trust-building across varied teams and stakeholders.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.

Additional Information

This position is fully remote within the continental U.S., Alaska, or Hawaii. Applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S.; visa sponsorship is not provided.

Compensation and Benefits

• Annual salary range between $75,000 and $80,000.
