Motion Graphic Designer

About the Role

WQED Multimedia, based in Pittsburgh, PA, is looking for a Motion Graphic Designer to enhance established visual branding into sleek graphics and animations. These will be used across multiple platforms including television, streaming services, websites, social media, podcasts, and other digital outlets.

This role reports directly to the Broadcast Promotion Manager and focuses on applying and expanding the work done by the Brand Designer who develops logos and campaign visuals. The Motion Graphic Designer creates motion content and original graphics when a new visual identity is not necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

• Implement WQED’s established brand elements including series logos and campaign identities into broadcast and digital content.
• Design motion graphics such as show opens, title sequences, lower thirds, transitions, end cards, tune-in promos, and explainer visuals.
• Develop reusable templates and toolkits for use by producers and editors in recurring productions.
• Adapt and animate approved creative assets for diverse platforms including TV, YouTube, mobile devices, podcasts, emails, and social media.
• Collaborate closely with producers, editors, and the Brand Designer to translate creative directions into clear kinetic designs.
• Create original static and animated graphics for projects without new branding requirements.
• Ensure all file outputs meet technical specs, accessibility standards, brand requirements, and are delivered on schedule.
• Maintain well-organized project files, templates, graphic libraries, and reusable assets for efficiency.
• Provide creative input during concept development, focusing on motion, pacing, visual hierarchy, and clarity across screen formats.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years’ professional experience in motion design, broadcast graphics, graphic design, post-production, or a similar discipline.
• Strong portfolio showing expertise in motion graphics, animation, typography, composition, and screen design.
• Expert skills in Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator; familiarity with Premiere Pro or equivalent video editing software.
• Knowledgeable about preparing graphics for TV, video, streaming, or digital production pipelines with an understanding of frame rates, aspect ratios, codecs, alpha channels, and safe areas.
• Ability to creatively extend existing brand visual systems, making informed decisions in motion and design structure.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and capacity to handle multiple projects to meet deadlines.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with producers, editors, designers, and content creators.

Preferred Experience

• Familiarity with 3D or visual-effects software such as Cinema 4D or Blender.
• Background in television, broadcast promotion, or high-volume media production settings.

Compensation & Benefits

This full-time, non-exempt position offers an hourly wage between $29 and $36, based on experience. Benefits include PPO health insurance, employer-funded dental, vision, disability, and life insurance plans, plus after 12 months employment, a 5% employer contribution to a 403(b) retirement plan.
