Role Overview

The E&M Trainer will be responsible for building and delivering medical coding training programs, with a strong focus on coding accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement. The role involves coaching coders, reviewing performance, supporting day-to-day queries, and keeping training content aligned with changing regulations and coding standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Create structured learning content such as guides, presentation decks, and quizzes to support medical coding training.
• Train new coders on core coding systems, including ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, coding tools, and billing workflows.
• Run refreshers and continuing education sessions for existing coders so their knowledge stays current.
• Deliver learning through different formats such as classroom sessions, workshops, webinars, and e-learning.
• Ensure trainees and coders follow current coding rules, including HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid, and payer-specific requirements.
• Evaluate coder performance through audits, assessments, and practical checks.
• Provide individual coaching to help coders improve accuracy, productivity, and confidence.
• Lead discussions and problem-solving sessions for difficult coding scenarios.
• Support coders with coding questions, case reviews, and technical issues as needed.
• Keep pace with updates to ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and related coding guidance.
• Audit coded work regularly to verify correct code selection, documentation quality, and payer-policy compliance.
• Share clear feedback with coders and supervisors on accuracy, compliance gaps, and improvement areas.
• Analyze coding mistakes to identify patterns and implement corrective actions.
• Track learner progress, assessments, and audit outcomes throughout the training cycle.
• Prepare management reports covering training results, coder performance, and development needs.
• Maintain records related to training activities, certifications, and compliance requirements.
• Stay informed through workshops, webinars, and conferences on coding changes, regulations, and software updates.
• Update training materials to reflect new coding standards, policy changes, and industry developments.
• Share practical insights with teammates to encourage ongoing learning across the function.
• Coordinate with coding supervisors, managers, and other teams to ensure training supports business and compliance goals.
• Join team discussions and contribute ideas to improve training processes and coding operations.

Eligibility

Open to any graduate. A high school diploma or equivalent is also acceptable, while a degree in Health Information Management, Medical Billing and Coding, or a related area is preferred.

Qualifications and Requirements

• CPC certification from AAPC or CCS certification from AHIMA is mandatory.
• At least 6 years of experience in medical coding is required.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in training, mentoring, or a similar coaching role is needed.
• Experience using medical coding software and EHR systems is highly preferred.
• Strong command of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and medical terminology is essential.
• Good understanding of HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid, and other healthcare coding regulations is required.
• Ability to design and deliver effective training programs is important for success in this role.
• Strong spoken and written communication skills are needed to explain complex topics clearly.
• Excellent organization and multitasking ability are necessary.
• Comfort working with diverse teams and giving constructive feedback is expected.
