Environmental Services Technician

About the Role

The Environmental Services Technician position within the General Services Department is dedicated to the upkeep and cleanliness of City facilities in Newport News, VA. This role involves a variety of custodial responsibilities such as dusting, polishing furniture, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, waxing, and maintaining floors through buffing and sanding.

There are part-time shifts available Monday through Friday, either from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and a full-time option from 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM including possible Saturdays. Essential tasks also include trash collection and furniture tidying across various City buildings. Safety awareness in handling cleaning materials and equipment is critical as some tasks involve hazardous chemicals.

Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness of City facilities through tasks such as dusting and polishing furniture.
• Perform floor care operations including buffing, sanding, waxing, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.
• Collect and dispose of trash daily and organize furniture as necessary.
• Manage time effectively to complete cleaning duties in multiple buildings.
• Comply with safety standards relating to hazardous chemicals and cleaning equipment.
• Work as Essential Personnel during emergencies as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Minimum of one year of custodial experience or equivalent education and experience combination.
• Ability to obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System Certification within the first year of employment.
• Preparedness to work in various environmental conditions including exposure to dirt, dust, odors, moisture, machinery, vibrations, toxic or pathogenic substances.

Compensation & Benefits

• The salary range for this position is between $37,000 and $56,100 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
