Lead, GIS Functional

Role overview

The Lead, GIS Functional is the senior functional owner for TAQA Distribution’s Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. This position is responsible for the functional design, configuration, support, and ongoing enhancement of the platform so it effectively serves geospatial and utility network management needs across the business. The role reports to the Manager, Platforms (EAM & Core Utilities) and ensures the GIS solution is set up to deliver dependable, high-quality capabilities for business users.

General responsibilities

In this role, you will help ensure that company policies, procedures, systems, and controls are followed in line with the group delegation of authority framework. You will also support timely and standard-compliant reporting, including periodic management and progress updates that keep senior leadership informed and support decision-making.

GIS functional responsibilities

• Take ownership of the functional configuration, upkeep, and continuous refinement of the GIS platform so it accurately supports utility network mapping, asset spatial management, and field data needs.
• Develop and implement GIS configurations such as utility network models, spatial data structures, map service setups, and field data collection processes aligned to operational requirements.
• Oversee GIS data quality and spatial integrity to keep network and asset information accurate, current, and consistent with field reality.
• Lead improvement and integration initiatives for the GIS platform so spatial information can be used across EAM, FSM, and data platform environments.
• Serve as the main GIS functional specialist for planning, operations, and engineering teams, supporting spatial analysis and GIS-based decision-making.
• Create and maintain key GIS documentation, including data dictionaries, layer definitions, map service catalogues, and user manuals.
• Deliver GIS training and provide functional support to operational and engineering users.
• Use AI-enabled geospatial analytics and machine learning methods to strengthen utility network analysis and improve operational decisions.

Required background

A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, or an equivalent qualification, is required. Candidates should have at least 6 years of relevant work experience. A master’s degree in Information Technology, or an equivalent qualification, is preferred, along with 9 years of relevant experience.
